A series of lectures: Strategies of Presentation 3
Nevenka Sivavec: THE SMALL TOWN OF CELJE
Kapelica Gallery, Kersnikova 4
Tuesday, 27th May at 9 pm
THE SMALL TOWN OF CELJE lecture is perceived as a very personal insight
into certain curatorial experiments performed by Nevenka Sivavec, an
art historian, curator of the Celje Art Salon, who deals mainly with
the research and presentation of marginal, outsider artistic practices,
which emerge from the local environment and projects that actively
include the local community.
She will analyse the activities in Celje during the 1970's and 80's,
which were presented in two exhibitions held at the Art Salon: in 1999
The Small Town of Celje–the alternative of the 1970's and in 2001 The
Small Town of Celje–the phantasms of the 1980's. She will also present
some other non-standardised projects and artists, who cannot be caught
within the existing criteria, trends and institutionalised discourses.
The Small Town of Celje is a case study of the marginalized art
production on the micro level of the Celje alternative. If it was still
possible to place the analysis of the activities of the 1970's into the
context of the alternative as a non-binding aesthetic situation, which
produces works of art merely marginally and base them on the idea of
conceptualism (the response in the broader Slovene area was accordingly
positive) it proved to be a different case already with the 1980's
exhibition. At this exhibition it was shown that for the Slovene
theoretical discourse the issues revealed by the exhibition The Small
Town of Celje–phantasms of the 1980's were not up-to-date or relevant,
for the exhibition remained without any sort of critical transcript or
response. This is on one side paradoxical and on the other
understanding, for it dealt with the most basic issues on the nature of
human creativity and presented images generated by a true belief in the
consecrated mission (magical powers) of the work of art and the belief
in one's own capability of mediating this power through the artist as a
medium.
Entrance free of charge.
The SCCA-Ljubljana publications will be made available at the lectures.
You are cordially invited.
