Vol. 63: The Start of "Kateigaho International Edition"
by Ozaki Tetsuya

Sekai Bunka Publishing Inc. has just unveiled an inaugural issue
of "Kateigaho International Edition." It's a full-colour magazine
with English language articles on "Japanese Arts & Culture" (with
Japanese summaries for the feature stories). The official launch
of the magazine is scheduled for October 2003, and after the first
volume it is going to appear quarterly. Art director is Yahagi
Kijuro.

Goto Shigeo ("Wasteland") Vol. 001

I produced the "TOKYOEYE" video+music event that was held on May
2nd at Morph in Roppongi. This first volume featured CG artist
Harada Daizaburo in a collaboration with "DMC WORLD FINAL"
champion, DJ Kentaro. I was a bit worried because we didn't make
much promotion for the event, but the event was quite a success
with surprisingly many visitors. The show was incredible, and the
artists themselves were so excited about their session that they
requested to appear again in future events. You can fiond a report
(in Japanese) here. We promise each other to meet again at a later
volume of TOKYOEYE. The second installment on August 1 is going to
be a tribute to Ukawa Naohiro. Please check the Web site frequently
for latest news until then.

Visitor #38: David Thorpe

RT met artist David Thorpe, who is currently showing his work
in an exhibition at Taro Nasu Gallery. Read his comments in the
"Tokyo Visitors' Book" section, to access from the Top page or

Kojima Shoji Flamenco 2003: La Plegaria

When you go to see 63-year-old Kojima Shoji, you might wonder
why only a dancer who could be his son is appearing on stage all
the time. But the young-looking man with the well-shaped body is
nobody but Kojima himself, and this representative of flamenco
in Japan is one of the best examples to show how karma can work
and mould a man's life once he encounters the right art form.
Always open to experimentation, Kojima has presented us with attempts
to integrate such Japanese traditional elements as Noh masks in the
past. On the other hand, his orthodox approaches to flamenco are much
closer to the real thing than the fancy spectacles of Joaquin
what's-his-name, which means that here it's about butoh-esque
expression through body movement, and not about trying to boost
tourism to Spain.
