Agradecemos el apoyo que nos ofrecieron durante el juicio de Tara Colon,
Cheri Honkala y Elizabeth Ortiz la semana pasada. Aqui mandamus el informe
del caso, que fue una gran victoria por el movimiento por los derechos
humanos economicos en los EEUU, y informes de nuestras actividades recientes
en contra de la guerra y por la justicia economica.

Aunque hayamos ganado este caso, la situacion que enfrentamos aqui se hace
mas peligrosa y represiva cada dia, mientras sigue una gran crisis economica
que empobrece a millones en este pais en medio de este tiempo de guerra. Asi
que nos queda bien claro la necesidad y la urgencia de la unidad de los
movimientos y de los pobres organizados del mundo.

KWRU SALE NO CULPABLE EN CASO DE TOMA

21 de marzo “ En una corte llena de gente en Filadelfia, el juez hoy
pronuncio a Cheri Honkala de KWRU, (y asi a Tara Colon y a Elizabeth Ortiz)
no culpables. Las tres madres de Kensington Welfare Rights Union,
organizacion miembra de COMPA y de la COCO en los EEUU, estaban bajo
persecucion por una toma de vivienda en que se alojo a dos familias sin
hogar el ano pasado.

Las tres lideres de KWRU fueron ajuiciados y enfrentaron la posibilidad de
encarcelamiento por ocupar una vivienda abandonada para dos familias que
fueron negadas ayuda por la cuidad y que no tenian otro lugar.

Una de las familias fue la de Tawanda, una madre con tres hijos que en este
entonces tenia un embarazo de alto riesgo. El medico le habia dicho que
tenia que quedarse en cama para rescatar la vida del bebe. Por tener una
historia de delito vinculado a las drogas, fue negada los pocos servicios
que ofrece la cuidad por familias sin hogar.

La otra familia, un padre soltero con cuatro hijos se habia negado por no
tener lugares en los refugios para gente sin hogar por padres con hijos.

Dado la evidencia de que estas familias no tenian otro remedio, y
acordandose con la defensa de KWRU que las vidas de estas familias estaban
en peligro, el juez pronuncio que la toma hecha por el KWRU fue justificada
para prevenir dano inmediato.

El KWRU agradece a todos los que llamaron, que escribieron cartas, que se
unio con nosotros en la marcha el 18 de marzo, y que cometieron la
disobediencia civil, para defender el derecho humano a la vivienda.

La decision del juez fue una vindicacion de nuestros esfuerzos, pero aun mas
nos acuerda de las contradicciones “que mientras el gobierno de nuestro pais
malgasta billones de dolares para tomarse control del petroleo del mundo,
aqui en los Estados Unidos ES UN HECHO DE DESOBEDIENCIA CIVIL CONSEGUIRLE
VIVIENDA POR FAMILIAS SIN TECHO. Creemos que la Marcha de los Pobres por los
Derechos Humanos Economicos en el mes agosto sera un paso importante en el
desarrollo de este movimiento para cambiar estas prioridades.

EL KWRU PARTICIPA EN MOVIMIENTO EN CONTRA DE LA GUERRA EN LOS EEUU
18 de marzo: Hoy el Kensington Welfare Rights Union tomo las calles en el
centro de Filadelfia en los EEUU para protestar la guerra y las violaciones
de derechos humanos cometidas por las autoridades aqui en los EEUU en contra
de su propia gente.

Mientras el mundo espera la guerra, tres lideres de KWRU estan amenazadas
con encarcelamiento por luchar por vivienda por familias sin techo. A la vez
que se persigue las companera y nuestra lucha, ambos los gobiernos estatales
y federales acaban de hacer recortes de billones de dolares en fondos para
la vivienda y por los pobres - billones que ahora se invierte en la guerra.

En la marcha, exigimos que las autoridades de la cuidad de Filadelfia
dejaran los cargos en contra de las companeras. Exigimos que el gobierno de
los Estados Unidos valore los derechos humanos mas que el dinero petrolero
“Fondos por Vivienda, NO por la Guerra fue nuestra lema y nuestro grito
mientras llenamos las calles del centro de Filadelfia, en la hora en que
salia la gente de al fin de dia de trabajo. Mientras marchamos, la policia,
inclusive la policia de inteligencia, empezo a arestar a manifestantes sin
aviso ninguno (como es la ley). Veintidos personas fueron arestados por la
policia, manifestando su apoyo por las madres de KWRU, denunciando la guerra
en este pais y por todo el mundo, y defendiendo los derechos humanos.

(La misma noche, como resultado del apoyo de gente a nivel local, nacional e
internacional, fueron liberados las 22 personas.)

Ademas de esta protesta, el KWRU ha estado jugando una parte importante en
el movimiento masivo en contra de la guerra en los EEUU. Cheri Honkala, la
directora de KWRU y la portavoz nacional de la Campana de los Pobres por los
Derechos Humanos Economicos (EEUU), ha sido oradora en casi todas las
marchas grandes, de cientos de miles de gente, que se ha hecho en Washington
DC, en Nueva York y en Filadelfia. El dia jueves, despues del inicio de la
guerra en Iraq, ella fue arestada junta a mas de ciento religiosas y otros
por cerrar el Edificio Federal de Filadelfia. Esta accion fue parte de una
serie de acciones en cada cuidad de los EEUU.

Con nuestra participacion, hemos estado luchando para asegurar que los
pobres, los mas afectados por la guerra aqui y por todo el mundo, tengamos
una voz y visibilidad. En esta clima de guerra estamos en una lucha por
NUESTRAS VIDAS y decimos que NO PUEDEN DESAPARECERNOS NI CALLARNOS, mientras
nos estan matando con la violencia economica, con la represion y con la
militarizacion tanto en los EEUU, que en Iraq, que en todo el hemisferio y
en el mundo.

KWRU NOT GUILTY
March 21st - In a packed courtroom in Philadelphia today, Cheri Honkala was
pronounced "not Guilty" in a trial for a housing takeover in which two
families were housed last year.

Both of the families housed by KWRU had been turned away by city support
services, and had nowhere else to go when KWRU moved them into an abandoned
HUD house last March.

Tawanda, a mother of three with a high-risk pregnancy who had been told she
should be on bed rest to save the life of her baby, was unable to get help
in the city system because of felony drug convictions.

Nelson and his four children had been turned away because there is no place
in city shelters for a father with children.

Given the evidence that these families had no other options, and agreeing
with the KWRU's defense that the lives of these families would be in
imminent danger if not housed, the judge found KWRU's action "justified" in
the interest of "preventing immediate harm."

KWRU would like to think all those who called, wrote letters, joined us on
the 18th, and committed civil disobedience to defend the right to housing.

The verdict was a vindication for our efforts, but also a sobering
reminder - that as we spend billions to seize control of the world's oil, at
home it is an act of civil disobedience to house a homeless family. We
believe the Poor People's March for Economic Human Rights this August will
be an important step in building a movement to change these priorities.

POOR IN THE UNITED STATES LEAD PROTEST AGAINST WAR AT HOME AND IN IRAQ!!

KWRU members arrested demanding funding for housing not for war!

HOMELESS LEADERS IN THE UNITED STATES FACE JAIL TIME FOR DEFENDING HUMAN
RIGHTS IN THE USA

Yesterday, March 18th, the Kensington Welfare Rights Union (KWRU), took to
the streets of downtown Philadelphia at rush hour to protest the war and
violations of human rights here in United States. The Kensington Welfare
Rights Union is a multi-racial organization, led by the poor, which is
spearheading a national movement for economic human rights in the United
States.

As the world waits for war, three KWRU mothers face possible jail time for
housing homeless families. This takes place at a time when both the federal
and state government have just cut billions of dollars in funding for
housing and for the poor.

We demanded that District Attorney drop all charges against the mothers, and
called on the United States to value human rights above oil money - "Money
for Housing, Not for War!" As we marched, police began arresting
demonstrators without warning. As those not choosing civil disobedience
backed away, a police bus pulled up. Twenty-two people were arrested by the
police, taking a powerful stand for the KWRU mothers, against the war here
and abroad, and for human rights.

THE POOR OF THE UNITED STATES JOIN IN WORLDWIDE PROTEST AGAINST THE WAR.

The poor of the United States join in worldwide protest against the war in
Iraq.

The Kensington Welfare Rights Union, a member of COMPA, and the Poor
People's Economic Human Rights Campaign join the world community in saying
"No to War." We are a growing, multiracial movement of families across the
United States who struggle every day to house and feed ourselves, to keep
the water and heat on, to educate our children, to provide basic health care
for our families. We know that this war is an effort by our government to
divert attention from the deep economic crisis here at home and
internationally. It's clear the real pain of this war will be borne by the
poor of both Iraq and the United States.

We are paying for this war in the form of massive cuts in social programs
for the unemployed, in cuts to housing, utilities and food assistance, and
in the form of privatization and the closing down of our schools and
hospitals. These policies of impoverishment and war are inseperably linked
to policies of "free" trade represented by the NAFTA, the FTAA and other
programs worldwide.

Despite efforts to keep the poor isolated and divided, we will continue to
stand up in unity to reclaim a world without poverty and war, a world of
human rights for all.
