For immediate release

The competition entries of the 49th International Short Film Festival
Oberhausen (1-6 May 2003) are selected. Below is some information about
general trends and all candidates of all competitions, listed by country of
production.

Reminder: deadline for accreditations is April 7, 2003
Please send requests for accreditation forms to niewalda at kurzfilmtage.de

INTERNATIONAL COMPETITION: Between movie theatre and museum
There are slightly fewer films in the competition this year 70 as opposed
to 79 last year chosen from a total of 3,661 submissions (3,703 last
year). 37 countries are represented in the competition (vs. 42 last year).
As in 2002, Great Britain is in the lead with eight entries, followed by
the USA with six and France with five. Europe is far and above the
strongest region, followed by South America and Asia. German short film is
represented in the International Competition by one production:
"Paralleluniversen" (Parallel Universes, Carolin Schmitz/Heike Mutter).
The 2003 International Competition carries on two trends already in
evidence in previous years. Typical for Oberhausen is the strong presence
of less prominent filmmaking nations, including this year Albania, India,
Kazakhstan, Colombia, Peru and Uruguay. And a tendency toward less distinct
boundaries between short film and art is attested in the 2003 competition
by filmmakers such as William Kentridge, Robert Cahen and Gabriela Golder,
whose work spans the borderline between film and art.

The International Jury
Claudio Caldini, filmmaker and video artist, Argentina
Connie Lam, Hong Kong Arts Center, PR China
Fanta Regina Nacro, filmmaker, Burkina Faso
Cecilia Lundqvist, filmmaker and video artist, Sweden
Gulnara Abekeeva, publicist and lecturer, Kazakhstan

GERMAN COMPETITION: Short film is booming
This year 30 short films are in the running to win the German Competition
(vs. 35 last year). For the first time, the 1,000-entry record was broken
(last year's entries numbered 951). Two trends are in evidence this year:
the narrative film is once again prevalent, often in combination with
experimental elements, and short film is apparently booming even outside of
film schools, as witnessed by the remarkable number of independent productions.
Participating this year are many artists already familiar in Oberhausen,
such as Matthias Müller, Christoph Girardet and Jochen Kuhn, along with
both 3sat Promotional Award winners from 2002, Bin Chuen Choi (who also won
the 2002 Deutscher Kurzfilmpreis - German Short Film Award) and Athanasios
Karanikolas, each with new works. Due to the success of the programme
structure introduced in 2002 with the German Competition taking place
primarily during the festival weekend this schedule will be maintained in
2003.

The German Competition Jury
Nicolaus Schafhausen, Frankfurter Kunstverein (Frankfurt Art Association)
Ralf Rückauer, ZDF/Das kleine Fernsehspiel, Mainz
Stefanie Schulte-Strathaus, Freunde der deutschen Kinemathek (Friends of
the German Film Archive), Berlin

CHILDREN'S AND YOUTH FILM COMPETITION: Suitable for young people
In this competition, the content of which is gleaned from entries in the
International and German Competitions, the Festival presents 37 films (vs.
39 last year) for various age groups from five to 16 years. In 2003 the
selection of films to choose from was greater than ever before, with a
particularly large number of films suitable for teenagers. The narrative
film predominates in this latter group, including a series of works that
address real-life problems faced by today's teenagers, such as pregnancy or
how to deal with homosexuality. Among the films geared for slightly younger
age groups are several documentaries, such as "Le combat" (Switzerland),
about a boxing match and how the boy prepares for it behind the scenes. As
can be expected, animated films prevail in the programme designed for five
to seven-year-olds.
Strong this year are Belgium with six entries and France with four. Two
German productions are included in the competition, as well as films from
Singapore, Thailand, Panama and South Korea.

MUVI AWARD: Livelier than ever
214 entries this year (vs. 170 last year) set a new submission record for
the MuVi Award, with 10 candidates making it to the final round. Despite
the current crisis in the music industry, the independent clip in
particular is alive and kicking in Germany. A major trend in 2003 is the
return of narrative the clips tend to be more cinematic this year.
Among this year's directors are previous award-winners Oliver Husain and
Michel Klöfkorn as well as Mark Sikora, but also young feature film
director Benjamin Quabeck. Several of the clips that will be shown in
Oberhausen feature well-known faces, such as Charlotte Roche, Julia Hummer
and Meret Becker. Cash prizes in connection with the 2003 awards, a total
of 5,000 euros, are sponsored by Diebels.

The MuVi Jury
Floria Sigismondi, director, Canada
Holger Liebs, Süddeutsche Zeitung, Germany
Thomas Meinecke, author and DJ, Germany
