Dance and Media
April 7 - 20, 2003

A Feast for the Senses

In the Beginning...

Great strides have been made of late in the union of dance and video. These
two arts have also had an effect on one another, which itself stands to
reason, concerned as they both are with motion. Filmmakers, choreographers,
and dancers alike are searching for a new form of expression, something
utterly removed from the documentary format.
Major international festivals, chief among them being "Dance Screen", are
supporting these efforts, as are production grant programs such as the
German Video Awards. We are conducting this video presentation in
conjunction with various European cultural agencies and Japan's "Dance and
Media 2003".

April 7(Mon.) - 11(Fri.) Every day 19:00~ Video Dances of Europe and
Israel
April 12(Sat.) - 13(Sun.) Every day 11:00~ Video Dances of Japan

Video Dance, a union of contemporary dance and video art, first emerged in
the 1990s. The camera was no longer merely a recording device, but came
instead to fulfill an important function in the process of creating dance
itself. The focus of the work has also shifted from the dancer to the
movements the dancer makes, with camera work and editing technologies used
to generate emotional impact in much the same way as choreography. Dance and
Media presents collaborations between filmmakers and choreographers in
Europe, Israel, and Japan, including many award-winning features, such as
"Framing Ideas", $(C(BDance Screen On Tour", and "Dance Exquise".
Video Dances of Japan is a collection of video dances created by the leading
Japanese artists in the field, with some 100 features scheduled to be shown
in succession over a two-day period. Professionals and amateurs alike are
represented, including artists who responded to the call for submissions and
those who assisted with securing materials.
The opening ceremonies will also include a performance by Kaori Ito and
Natsuko Tezuka.

Christian Ziegler: real time presence
A Workshop on Finding and Presenting the Relationship Between Dance and
Video

Using such noteworthy video programming software packages as MAX/MSP,
JITTER, and NATO, the workshop will cover how to present dancers' movements,
generating video footage in real time. Examples include capturing a dancer
in motion in real time with a digital video camera, then simultaneously
rotating and delaying the footage by five seconds, and thus capturing the
backdrop behind the dancer in the form of an installation. Attendees will
work together to make a performance piece, all equal participants,
regardless of whether they may be dancers, filmmakers, or programmers.
Productions made by attendees within the allotted time will be screened on
the last day of the workshop. Participants will work and experiment in the
context of frequent discussions with the instructor and staff on the real
time relationship between dance and video, attempting to answer the question
of what is happening, or can be made to happen, at a given moment in time.

Applicants:
1. Individual Participants: Approximate Maximum 15, 15000 yen attendance
fee
Five participants on MAX/MSP, NATO, JITTER, ISADORA (Mac OS
Experience Required)
Five or six video operators (Mac OS Experience Required)
Several Dancers or other Performers (Send Resume)

2. Group Participants: Three or Four Groups, 10,000 yen per person
attendance fee
Groups of three to five members each
* Groups made up entirely of dancers who have no experience with MAX cannot
participate. * Groups whose members all have experience with MAX are
welcome.
* There will be no Macs to loan to groups, so each group must provide their
own.
* Install MAX and other necessary software prior to the workshop.

     Christian Ziegler Lecture and Demonstration
from?Improvisation Technologies?to?Scanned V(5)?(Translation available)
April 20(Sun.) start 18:30 at Spiral Hall: 1500yen

real time presence: After the workshop, a view of dance and installation
using MAX/MSP

Christian Ziegler, a leader in dance and installation in Germany, will give
a demonstration of the MAX/MSP, JITTER, and NATO programs, and show the
effects of which they are capable. Attendees will be able to experience his
creative inspiration, while viewing his works to-date and the report on the
abovementioned workshop. Yuzo Ishiyama, head of the Nest performing troupe,
which constantly seeks connections between art and new forms of media, will
put on a special performance during the demonstration, marking their first
collaboration with Ziegler.

Christian Ziegler: Since 1993, Mr. Ziegler has been a central figure in the
production of the William Forsythe CD-ROM "Improvisation Technologies A.
Tool for the Analytical Dance Eye", produced by ZKM (the Media Art Center)
of Karlsruhe, Germany. He currently serves as a guest artist at ZKM, working
on the Scanned I-V project, whose purpose is creating a media framework for
the movements of dance.
