1. HAMLET MACHINE IN RUIGOORD

13,14,15,16 maart - Prelude op het World Wide Video Festival 2003
Een interdisciplinaire productie van Dominik Barbier naar een stuk van
Heiner Muller.

Op donderdag 13 maart vindt de wereldpremière plaats van de inter
disciplinaire voorstelling
Hamlet Machine in een uitvoering van de Franse kunstenaar Dominik Barbier,
naar een tekst van
de legendarische Duitse toneelschrijver Heiner Müller. Müller was tot aan
zijn dood in 1995
actief betrokken bij de uitvoering van deze productie waarin meerdere
artistieke disciplines
zijn verenigd: beeldende kunst, elektronische muziek, dans en theater.
Acteurs van Toneelgroep Amsterdam - Alwin Pulinckx en Hugo Colscha - spelen
samen met onder
andere de Franse musici Kaspar Toeplitz, Laurent Dailleau, Didier
Casamitjana, acteur Zaidi
Hocine en danseres Giovanna Velardi. Dominik Barbier heeft zeven jaar aan
deze productie gewerkt.
Tien projecties met de eigenzinnige en authentieke beelden van Barbier,
voorzien van de originele
manuscripten van Müller, gaan een samenspel aan met muzikanten,acteurs en
een danseres.
Het publiek wordt gedurende 1,5 uur geheel omgeven door muziek, beeld en
geluid. De locatie is een
500 m2 grote schuur in Ruigoord Amsterdam.

3. Achtergrond bij de productie:

Hamlet Machine is een van de meest ambitieuze werken in het oeuvre van
Heiner Müller, en neemt een
belangrijke plaats in in het hele Europese theater- repertoire. Hamlet
Machine is gebaseerd op de
poging van Heiner Müller om Hamlet in Budapest te schrijven, een
Shakespeariaans drama in de
socialistische wereld over de koude oorlog en de Hongaarse opstand in
Budapest van 1956.
Onder de indruk van werk en persoon van Heiner Müller maakt Dominik Barbier
in 1993 de documentaire
J’étais Hamlet. In deze film over Heiner Müller wil Barbier vooral de
geschriften van Müller
‘zichtbaar’maken, een poging doen om de esthetische schok en diepe emoties
weer te geven die hij
onderging bij het lezen van diens ongelooflijke teksten. J’etais Hamlet is
over de hele wereld
vertoond op festivals en in diverse Europese landen op televisie
uitgezonden.
De documentaire kreeg een vervolg in de Hamlet Machine die hij samen met
Heiner Müller ontwikkelde.
Het theaterproject vond een abrupt einde toen Müller in 1995 plotseling
overleed. Voortbordurend op
het reeds verzamelde materiaal heeft Barbier, sinds 1996, onder de
gezamenlijke noemer Cycle de la
cité des morts (Dodenstadcyclus), een reeks kleinere projecten gedaan in de
vorm van video-
installaties, interactieve installaties, video’s en cd-roms. Parallel
hieraan is hij zich blijven
verdiepen in de mogelijkheden die elektronische kunst biedt in combinatie
met theatrale presentaties.
Nu, acht jaar na de dood van Müller, presenteert Barbier de wereldpremière
van Hamlet Machine op
13 maart a.s. te Ruigoord Amsterdam. Van Dominik Barbier waren al eerder de
volgende werken te zien op het World Wide Video Festival: L’oeuvre
Inquiétante (in 1987) en J’étais Hamlet (in 1994).

4. Aanvangstijden:

- Première: donderdagavond 13 maart 2003 van 20.30 uur - 22.00 uur
- Middagvoorstellingen: vrijdag, zaterdag en zondag van 14.30 - 16.00 uur
- Avondvoorstellingen: vrijdag, zaterdag en zondag van 20.30 - 22.00 uur
De werkelijke voorstelling duurt 110 minuten; de zaal gaat bij de
middagvoorstellingen een half uur
van tevoren open en blijft na de middag- en avondvoorstellingen open zodat
het publiek een drankje
kan drinken en kan napraten over de voorstelling.

Kaarten voor de voorstelling zijn 10 euro, met korting 8 euro. Gezien de
aard van de voorstelling
is het aantal beschikbare plaatsen beperkt. Reserveren is noodzakelijk via

Prelude to the World Wide Video Festival 2003
An interdisciplinary production by Dominik Barbier, based on a play by
Heiner Müller.

2. About Hamlet Machine
-------------------------------------------------
On Thursday 13 March 2003 the world premiere will take place of the
interdisciplinary production Hamlet Machine, as conceived by French artist
Dominik Barbier, based on a text by the legendary German playwright Heiner
Müller, who, until his death in 1995, was actively involved in this project.
In this version Barbier brings together various art disciplines: visual art,
electronic music, dance and theatre.
Actors of Toneelgroep Amsterdam - Alwin Pulinckx and Hugo Colscha - will
collaborate with French musicians Kaspar Toeplitz, Laurent Dailleau, Didier
Casamitjana, actor Zaidi Hocine and dancer Giovanna Velardi. Ten projections
of Barbier’s characteristic, authentic images, enhanced by Heiner Müller’s
original texts, will interact with the musicians, actors and the dancer. For
almost two hours the audience will be immersed in music, images and sound.
The venue is a large barn in Ruigoord, Amsterdam.

3. Background information

Hamlet Machine is one of the most ambitious works in Heiner Müller’s oeuvre,
and is recognized as one of the most prominent pieces of European theatre.
The piece is based on Müller’s attempt to write Hamlet in Budapest, a
Shakespearian drama set in the socialist world, about the Cold War and the
Hungarian uprising of 1956.
Impressed by both Heiner Müller’s writings and personality, in 1993 Dominik
Barbier made the documentary J’étais Hamlet. Here, Barbier foremost wanted
to ‘visualize’ Müller’s writings in an attempt to convey the aesthetic shock
and deep emotions he had experienced while reading Müller’s incredible
texts. J’étais Hamlet was shown at festivals all over the world and was
broadcasted on television in various European countries.
This was followed by a production of the Hamlet Machine, together with
Heiner Müller. This theatre project ended abruptly when in 1995 Müller
suddenly died. Elaborating on the material accumulated so far, Barbier has
realized a number of smaller projects around this theme since 1996: other
video installations, interactive installations, videos and CD-ROMs under the
collective title Cycle de la cité des morts (Cycle of the City of the Dead).
Simultaneously he further explored the possibilities that electronic art had
to offer in combination with theatrical presentation.
Now, eight years after Müller’s death, Barbier will present the world
première of Hamlet Machine in Ruigoord, Amsterdam, on 13 March of this
year.Other works by Dominik Barbier that were previously presented at the
World Wide Video Festival include: L’oeuvre Inquiétante (in1987) and J’étais
Hamlet (in 1994).

Tickets are 10 euro, with discount 8 euro.
Because of the special nature of this performance, only a limited number of
visitors may attend. You are advised to make a reservation via www.wwvf.nl
or www.uitlijn.nl (+31.20.6211288). You can also obtain Tickets
via the AUB Ticketshop at the Leidseplein 26, Amsterdam.
There is a discount for CJP, Student ID, VPRO Backstage Pass holders,
members of Arti et Amicvitiae, Melkweg, BNO and Stedelijk Museum
Pass-holders.

- Première: Thursday night 13 March 2003 from 8.30 until 10 pm
- Matinees: Friday, Saturday and Sunday, from 2.30 pm until 4 pm
- Night shows: Friday, Saturday and Sunday, start 8.30 pm; until 10 pm
The actual presentation lasts 110 minutes; at the matinees, the doors will
be open half an hour before, and at both the matinees and the night shows
will remain open for half an hour after the show, to give the audience the
opportunity to enjoy a drink and discuss the presentation.
