Vol. 65: Facing Death
by Ozaki Tetsuya

"Deathclock," a work by artist Miyajima Tatsuo, has just gone on
sale. Following "Death of Time" (1990-92) and "Mega Death" (1999),
this third part concludes and summarizes the "Death Series." The
following explanation is from the press release: "Participants in
this project, i.e. the purchasers of this work of art will initially
face their own "life" and "death" and think about the rest of their
life time. They are requested in the Internet to answer such
questions as 'up until what day and month of year do you want to
live?' [...] The participants install the CD-ROM into their computers.
Connecting a Web-camera, the purchaser can timely take a photo of
his/her own 'self.' After the installation of the CD-ROM, the
countdown starts up until the time of zero, meaning the time of
'Death.'"

Nakanishi Daisuke ("Little More") Vol. 011

Nanao Tabito's 3rd album "Hikigatari Monogatari vol. 1: Hummingbird"
goes on sale today, so Iwant to write a few lines about this
wonderful record. The point that the songs this time were
significantly trimmed down distinguishes it from previous releases.
But the boldly changing sound designs makes it entertaining from
the beginning to the end, which, to be precise, does include
shallow parts the listener is guided along on his/her tour through
this tour de force album. It's the achievement of powerful music
and lyrics, of course, but what's even more effective than this is
the strong, "otherwordly" feel. Nanao is a truly unique artist.
I hope his cold got better - mine is getting worse...

Visiting Tokyo from San Francisco is artist/filmmaker Leeson,
to promote her movie "Conceiving Ada." Read her comments in

(4) Event Pick of the Week

Mukojima Bicycle Art & Net Project

You probably knew about Mukojima that some artists' communities
were founded there, but did you also know that it's the
neighborhood with the most bicycles in town? Once again Tokyo's
hip east end area is the place where a new movement is kicked
off now! In a project on the theme of recycling bicycles that
have been abandoned around Sumida Ward, a number of artists are
proposing the reuse of the vehicle as a communication tool in
various workshops, performances, etc. The mysterious Tsumamare
world that's being played in the setting of a Japanese restaurant,
and other happenings are clear signs of an outbreak of something
greatly interesting, so if you don't want to miss that, this is
where you'll have to be for the next two weeks.
