Dear friends,

ALTERNE (Alternative Realities in Networked Environments) consortium
announces a call for artistic BRIEFS.

The consortium works on the Research and Development project funded by
European Commission and will choose the relevant artistic projects to
its research activities and objectives. The chosen projects will acquire
access to new tools, interfaces, SW and technologies related to
Qualitative Physics, virtual storytelling, AI technology, implementation
of alternative principles of causality and new visualization techniques
for immersive CAVE-like environments.

We try to promote collaboration between high-tech artists and research
laboratories and now announce a call for BRIEFS with the aim to collect
very actual artistic proposals in domain of Virtual, Augmented and Mixed
Reality.

If you personally have in mind a project which would comply as much as
possible with the ALTERNE GUIDELINES -attached- or you would know about
a colleague of yours active in the field with a proposal, please, do not
hesitate to contact us for further info /e.g. details on Alternative
Reality Technology/ or send along the BRIEF.

We would like you to consider our CALL FOR BRIEFS and reply by July 10,
2003.

The BRIEF should not exceed four pages and is encouraged to include:
title, abstract, concept of the work, project description, technical
description, drawings and schemes. Please, send also a short biography
(1-2 pages) including education, career, exhibition list and list of
activities as well as contact address (including telephone number and
email address).

All briefs will be kept confidential with respect for intellectual
property rights.

What ALTERNE will be:


NOVEL KIND OF PLATFORM FOR THE DEVELOPMENT OF HIGH-END DIGITAL ARTS PRODUCTIONS AND THE TEACHING OF MIXED REALITIES / DIGITAL ARTS INSTALLATIONS


1. ALTERNE platform is based on: 

<sum> Extension of  the traditional techniques of Mixed Reality

<sum> Integration between the various techniques supporting Mixed Reality, graphics, interaction and behavioural models 

<sum> Improved participation and  diffusion 


2. ALTERNE platform supports:

<sum> Investigation of cognitive and communications phenomena in Digital Arts 

<sum> Construction of intelligent interactive spaces 

<sum> Exploration of various forms of perception of space-time and spatial cognition.

<sum> Incorporation of  behavioural techniques for the environment as a whole 

<sum> Virtual audiences and  storytelling aspects

<sum> Artistic conception of artificiality


3. ALTERNE platform will embed:

<sum> New high-level authoring tool for artistic development, explorations and new experimentations facilitating needs of the greatest variety of artists 

<sum> Integration “platforms” that can support the creation throughout its whole process

<sum> Cost-effective solution, some components of which will be available separately to serve smaller-scale developments

 What Artistic Project in ALTERNE should be:



HIGH-END INTERACTIVE INSTALLATION BASED ON AN IMMERSIVE PROJECTION SYSTEM (SAS-Cube) AND ITS ASSOCIATED I/O DEVICES

It should provide:

ALTERNATIVE SPACES  =  NEW FORMS OF DIGITAL CONTENT:
            which    
ß interpenetrate
ß interchange
ß hybrid 

     with real worlds, with Virtual Reality, with Augmented or Mixed Realities


It should involve:

<sum> Narratives strategies for novel representations of space-time orders

<sum> New forms of system behaviour related to the human emotions

<sum> Distribution on the Internet:

ß streaming video
ß streaming audio
ß live broadcasting of artistic events 
ß remote participation 
ß remote interaction

<sum> Alternative characters and functionalities of multiple realities 
<sum> Creation of  fit-to-feeling virtual environments
<sum> Graphic 3D visualisation software: games engines, X3D 
<sum> Visitors of the ALTERNE artistic installation should interact with the fictitious environment
<sum> Virtual-alternative representation can be altered by visitor’s presence.

Artistic installation preferred features :

<sum> sophisticated interactivity with high level of immersion, possibility to affect not only avatars and objects, but also whole Environment
<sum> high complexity of system behavior, the narrative strategies and AI techniques implementation, the environment with qualitative physics implemented
<sum> possibility to access the installation remotely via Internet network (video streaming, data sharing)
<sum> representation in partially or fully 3D environment, using the real-time visualization (game engine, X3D) in immersive projection system and standard PC (remote users)
<sum> effective user interface based on affordable solutions (various  input devices, sensors, MIDI, cameras, microphones...)
<sum> all visual parts are supposed to have a high aesthetical value
<sum> mixed reality concept – the integration of real and virtual objects into common environment
