Vol. 64: WASP II
by Ozaki Tetsuya

After spending about one year in London, Ms. F returns to Japan,
where she meets Ms. S in her house for the first time in a while.
What Ms. F brought as a souvenir from London is a self-made video
of an anti-war demo she witnessed there on February 15. With
estimates fluctuating between one and two million protesters it
was a happening with a record-breaking number of participants,
and just by watching the video hat was shot from a participant's
perspective one gets an idea of the event's overwhelming dimensions.
The Japanese massmedie, on the other hand, are twiddling their
thumbs while reporting commonplaces and leaving such historical
news uncommentated.

Baba Masataka ("A") Vol. 012

I'm at the Kanda Matsuri.
I mentioned before on this page that architecture photographer
Ano, who worked with me on the "R the Transformers" book, has
set up a living+working+parking+gallery (?) space in Kodenmacho,
Higashi-Nihonbashi, and recently the daily business there has
started. Today Ano and his wife are participating in the festival,
carrying an "omikoshi" portable shrine around the neighborhood.
While considering to take part myself in the next matsuri that
comes across, I'm watching the spectacle from the roadside. All
the former beauty queens (probably) of the area have gathered,
and while some of them come over and talk to me they all seem to
be melting down perfectly with the neighborhood.

Dobutsu Denki: Atsumare! Natsuyasai

Dobutsu Denki, the troupe that always manages somehow to make
people laugh gently at their combination of primitive, sticky,
and very physical jokes, celebrate their 10th anniversary this
year. Even if it's always the same pattern and you know all the
time what comes next, here this pattern is a really fine one!
The only thing that's different this time is that company leader
Masaoka Taishi makes his first attempt in a main role here. How
sweet, the chubby boy... Well, frankly speaking, the point that
makes this show worth checking out is how the actor known from
his impudent "fat man" roles plays the part of a "man who saw
his once beautiful wife grow ugly." For the key to the story,
however, you'll have to look in the vegetables (yasai). It's
just funny how the whole thing sounds much fresher by using not
just "yasai," but "natsuyasai" for the title...
