Venice Biennale: A Little Different This Time
by Harada Yukiko

During more than 100 years the world's biggest art event, the
Venice Biennale, has been held a total of 50 times now, and all
I've seen of it are the last five events. Nevertheless, during my
visit this year I felt clearly that something was different in
Venice. This year I had much more fun than at previous events,
and I left the spectacle totally satisfied. Other visitors might
disagree, but for me Venice was different this year, and I'd like
to use this occasion to tell you how and why

Goto Shigeo ("Wasteland") Vol. 003

July 12-20
Summer is my favourite season, which micht have something to do
with the fact that I was born in August. I'm on the road as usual,
moving back and forth between Tokyo, Kyoto and Osaka. These are
the days of regaling on Manganji's red pepper, aubergines, green
soybeens from Tango and other delicacies the cities' assortments
of summer vegetables have to offer. Plus, I'm totally in festival
mood. I just extended my journey quite a bit to watch (or actually
participate in) the "fire festival" in Nachi Katsuura.

Iceland Blue presents Earth Beat

"Iceland Blue" has introduced various aspects of the culture of
Iceland, and one of the most interesting bands from the island
appears in a live concert closing the series of events (a little
too early since the real summer hasn't arrived in Tokyo yet).
Popular music from Iceland means first of all Bjork, but there
are also such artists as Sigur Ros or Gus Gus, who contribute
to an extraordinarily fresh and original scene. Now take such
varied styles as post rock, techno, electroclash and jazz, throw
them all together, and what you get is the exciting mixture sound
of Trabant. Their first Japan appearance promises a highly
entertaining show of pop music you've probably never heard before.
