Vol. 57: The Power of Location part 5
by Ozaki Tetsuya

Gojo-Horikawa, Kyoto. A modern 5-story (+loft) building made of
stone. The first time I visited the Masudaya Building was in the
fall of 2002, following the invitation of one of the REALOSAKA
staff members to show me "an interesting place." First we checked
out the Gallery Antenna on the second floor. In the Kyoto art
world the place is well known as a venue for contemporary art
exhibitions, but also for workshops and concerts, as well as the
sale of artists' books, fashion goods, etc. I met owner Oku
Kazutomi, who introduced me to the

Baba Masataka ("A" magazine) vol. 009

I started seriously looking for a new place to live in Nihombashi.
I also want to move my office there. Architecture photographer
Kawano (who shot all the pictures in the R-project book
"R>>The Transformers") dug up a warehouse in Kodenma-cho, Nihombashi,
and he's planning to convert it into a residence+studio+office+gallery
space. It's an incredible place: a four-story wooden construction of
almost 200 sq.m. in total, partly with a 4th floor loft, basement, a
freight elevator, a ceiling of 4m height on the first floor... It's
within walking distance from Kanda station, and costs only slightly
over 200,000 yen per month. Restoration into the original condition
is required. Unbelievable! To rebuild a warehouse it takes quite a
motivation and preparedness, but I think this one's definitely
interesting. At a certain point we came to call such buildings
"potential buildings."

(3) Event Pick of the Week

ACA Media Arts Festival

This festival, in which talents from newcomers in media arts and
computer graphics to big names from manga and animation were awarded
in the past, is held for the sixth time. As usual, this year there
are four divisions with each a Grand Prize and an Excellence Prize
to give away. This occasion is of course celebrated with exhibitions
of the successive prize winners, as well as a symposium (with media
artist Fujihata Masaki, manga creator Kuroda Io, and animator Oshii
Mamoru) that will be held three times during the event's period.
Also, in celebration of the opening of a new section featuring
interviews with previous prize winners on the festival's Web site,
RT's editor-in-chief will appear in a talk show with animation
director Takahata Isao on 3/7 (Fri).
