Naast het jaarlijkse Impakt Festival organiseert Impakt ook 
activiteiten door het jaar heen:

NEGATIVLAND: CREATIVE MEDIA RESISTANCE

Een lezing en filmprogramma van Mark Hosler / Negativland

Mark Hosler is een van de oprichters van het roemruchte Amerikaanse 
'sample' collectief NEGATIVLAND. De leden van NEGATIVLAND zijn zowel 
kunstenaars als activisten. Met hun werk geven zij een spreekbuis aan 
het verzet tegen de groeiende invloed van commerciele belangen op 
onze cultuur. Door het hergebruik van muziek en beeldmateriaal uit 
onze massacultuur stellen zij op kritische maar ook vaak 
humoristische wijze issues omtrent copyright en auteurschap aan de 
orde. NEGATIVLAND kreeg bijvoorbeeld veel aandacht vanwege hun CD 
waarop ze muziek van U2 sampelden. Naar aanleiding van de rechtzaak 
die hier op volgde brachten zij het boek "Fair Use: The Story Of The 
Letter U And The Numeral 2" uit. De U2 affaire is niet de enige keer 
dat Negativland met het recht in aanraking kwam. Vaak zoeken ze juist 
het conflict op om zodoende de discussies rond cultureel erfgoed en 
intelectueel eigendom op het scherpst van de snede te voeren. De 
korte films die Hosler tijdens zijn lezing zal vertonen zul je niet 
snel op MTV of andere mainstream zenders zien. Net als de muziek van 
Negativland zelf bevinden ze zich in het juridisch schemergebied 
tussen citaat en plagiaat. Hosler zal ook voorbeelden laten zien van 
de vele projecten, en de ludieke acties die Negativland sinds 1980 
uitgevoerd heeft. Aan de hand hiervan gaat hij in op de diverse voor 
NEGATIVLAND zo typische thema's als "anti-corporate art/activism", 
"culture jamming" en de ontwikkeling van kunst en wetgeving in onze 
van media doordrenkte en globaliserende samenleving.

Een filmprogramma samengesteld en gepresenteerd door de Duitse 
kunstenares Corinna Schnitt.
Naast haar eigen films bevat het programma werk van Bjørn Melhus, 
Marie Paccou, Frédéric Pelle, Pawel Lozinski en Stanislaw Mucha.
- Het Impakt Festival 2003 zal plaatsvinden van 3 t/m 9 juni in het 
Centraal Museum in Utrecht.

NEGATIVLAND: CREATIVE MEDIA RESISTANCE

A film presentation and lecture by Mark Hosler / Negativland.

Mark Hosler is a founding member of the infamous American sample 
collective NEGATIVLAND. The members of NEGATIVLAND have become 
outspoken artists activists (particularly in the world of 
intellectual property), providing a soundtrack to the growing global 
movement against corporate power in our lives.
By their use of music and images from mass-culture, they address 
issues concerning copyright and authorship in a critical and humorous 
way. Negativland - for instance - got a lot of media attention as a 
result of the release of their CD with U2 samples. As a reaction to 
the law suit that followed, they published the book "Fair Use: The 
Story Of The Letter U And The Numeral 2". The U2 case was not the 
only time NEGATIVLAND got in touch with the law. They often seek 
confrontation in order to enhance the debate on cultural heritage and 
intellectual property. None of the short films shown in this program 
will ever be seen on MTV, and much of it is visually in the same 
legal grey area that NEGATIVLAND has explored with sound for the last 
20 years. Hosler will also screen videos documenting the many 
creative projects, hoaxes, pranks and "culture jamming" that 
NEGATIVLAND has been doing since 1980. The presentation covers issues 
of media-literacy, anti-corporate art/activism, the role of 
advertising and corporate power in our lives, and the evolution of 
art, law and resistance in a media saturated multi-national world.

- The Impakt Festival 2003 will be organized from June 3 to 9 in the 
Centraal Museum in Utrecht, The Netherlands.
