Dear people,
In cooperation with the upcoming Nederlands Film Festival, Mediamatic is organizing a special workshop about interactive narration for film editors.
In this very intensive 5-day workshop, 16 film editors study the particular qualities of nonlinear storytelling and build their own interactive narrative. The participants use the latest version of the elegant and easy-to-use Korsakow System (see below), developed at the University of the Arts in Berlin. Participants are not required to have specific technical know-how of new media, but are required to have editing experience in film, TV, advertisement or video.
EDITING AND INTERACTIVE NARRATION
Making interactive narrations requires a fresh look at the editing process. In this workshop the participants look the specific possibilities offered (and questions posed by) nonlinear storytelling in relation to editing.
What does it mean to replace an absolute cut by a possible link? How does one maintain tension with the integration of the users choices ? And, most importantly, how can the users choices be integrated meaningfully in the work ?
In a nonlinear environment, different possible montages and selections of material exist parallel to each other and form each other's contexts, and it is the user that ultimately chooses a path, thereby finishing the montage. But he can only do so within the possibilities that the editor has set up for him.
The footage to be used in this workshop will be collected by Mediamatic in cooperation with Nederlands Film Festival. To a limited extent, participants can also add their own material.
KORSAKOW SYSTEM
As practical research tool the participants use the Korsakow System developed at the University of the Arts (UdK) in Berlin. The Korsakow System consists of an editing environment for nonlinear narratives, as well as an elegant presentation tool for interactive film and audio projects. The Korsakow System works with a simple but very effective database structure that allows the author to add, withdraw and rearrange material in a very efficient way. More information on the Korsakow System can be found at http://www.korsakow.com
