Van 12 tot 17 mei organiseert Mediamatic in samenwerking met het World Wide
Video Festival een speciale workshop over interactief vertellen voor
videokunstenaars. In deze intensieve 5-daagse workshop onderzoeken de
deelnemers de eigenschappen van interactieve vertelwijzen en bouwen ze hun
eigen interactieve vertelling.
U bent hierbij uitgenodigd deel te nemen aan deze workshop. Als u en in

Interactief Vertellen

In deze intensieve vijfdaagse workshop maken maximaal 16 internationale
videokunstenaars hun eigen interactieve vertellingen. Vanuit het perspectief
van hun discipline bestuderen de deelnemers de mogelijkheden en
moeilijkheden van interactieve vertellingen: Hoe bouw je spanning op in een
non-lineaire omgeving? Wat gebeurt er als meerdere parallelle verhaallijnen
elkaars context vormen? Welke rollen kunnen tijd en timing spelen in een
interactief verhaal? Hoe kunnen de handelingen van de gebruiker
betekenisvol worden geintegreerd?

Korsakow Systeem
-------------------------------------------------
De deelnemers maken gebruik van de laatste versie van het elegante en
makkelijk te leren Korsakow Systeem, dat wordt ontwikkeld aan de
Universitaet der Kuenste (UdK) in Berlijn. Dit systeem bestaat uit een
redactionele omgeving voor non-lineaire vertellingen en een presentatie tool
voor interactieve film- en audioprojecten. Zie voor meer informatie

Het videomateriaal waarmee de deelnemers werken wordt verzameld door
Mediamatic in samenwerking met het WWVF. De deelnemers kunnen ook enig eigen
materiaal inbrengen.

Workshop Coaches
-------------------------------------------------
De workshop wordt geleid door Mediamatic in samenwerking met de UdK. De
coaches zijn Florian Thalhofer, Klaas Kuitenbrouwer, Professor Willem
Velthoven en acht studenten van de UdK. De workshops zullen in het engels
zijn.

Opzet van de workshop
-------------------------------------------------
De eerste dag van de workshop wordt besteed aan introducties: van de
trainers, de deelnemers, de onderwerpen, de opzet van de workshop, het
materiaal en de software die gebruikt gaat worden. Op de tweede dag leren
de deelnemers om te gaan met het Korsakow Systeem, en ontwikkelen ze de ruwe
opzet van hun projecten. Op de derde en vierde dag werken de deelnemers aan
hun projecten, daarbij geassisteerd door studenten van de UdK, ervaren
gebruikers van het Korsakow Systeem. Uit het werk van de deelnemers worden
telkens ideeën en problemen gelicht die centraal besproken worden.
De vijfde dag worden de projecten afgemaakt en volgt een interne
eindpresentatie voor een klein publiek. Uit de projecten wordt dan een
selectie gemaakt voor een grote eindpresentatie aan het festivalpubliek.

De workshop vindt plaats van 12 t/m 16 mei 2003, van 11.00 - 17.00 uur in de
Passenger Terminal Amsterdam (PTA) aan de Oostelijke Handelskade. De
eindpresentatie van de workshopresultaten en workshopervaringen voor het
festivalpubliek vindt plaats op zaterdag 17 mei, 20.00 uur in het auditorium
van de PTA.
Kosten voor deelname: 200 euro.

In cooperation with the upcoming World Wide Video Festival, Mediamatic is
organising a special workshop about interactive narration for video artists.
In this very intensive 5-day workshop, 16 international video artists study
the particular qualities of nonlinear storytelling and build their own
interactive narrative. The participants use the latest version of the
elegant
and easy-to-use Korsakow System, developed at the University of the Arts in
Berlin. Participants are not required to have specific technical know-how.

Interactive Storytelling
-------------------------------------------------
In this workshop the participants study the specific possibilities offered
(and questions posed by) nonlinear storytelling: how does one maintain
tension in a nonlinear story? What does it mean to replace the absolute cut
with the possible link? And, most importantly, how can the users' choices be
integrated into the meaning of the work? In a nonlinear environment,
different montages and selections of material exist parallel to each other
and form each other's contexts. Nonlinear narrative environments thereby
offer different ways of establishing meaning and different rhetorical
possibilities.
The video material for this workshop will be collected by Mediamatic in
co-operation with the WWVF. To a limited extent, participants can also add
their own material.

Korsakow System
-------------------------------------------------
As practical research tool the participants use the Korsakow System
developed at the University of the Arts (UdK) in Berlin. The Korsakow System
consists of an editing environment for nonlinear narratives, as well as an
elegant presentation tool for interactive film and audio projects. The
Korsakow System works with a simple but very effective database structure
that allows the author to add, withdraw and rearrange material in a very
efficient way. More information on the Korsakow System can be found at

Workshop Coaches
-------------------------------------------------
The workshop will be supervised by Mediamatic in cooperation with the UdK.
The coaches are:
- Florian Thalhofer, artist and maker of the interactive documentary The
Korsakow Syndrome and original builder of the Korsakow System.
- Klaas Kuitenbrouwer, organizer and coach of Mediamatic's Designing
Behavior workshops. Klaas coached numerous workshops on interactive media,
and lectures on new media and interactive narratives on art academies and
universities.
- Professor Willem Velthoven, professor in Monomedia at the UdK and chairman
of Mediamatic Foundation.
- Eight students of the UdK who are experienced Korsakow System authors will
act as personal assistants to the participants in all aspects of the
realisation of their projects.

Workshop Setup
-------------------------------------------------
The first day of the workshop introduces participants and coaches, workshop
topics and setup, and materials and software. On the second day the
participants train with the Korsakow System and develop rough outlines for
ideas for their projects. The third and fourth day the participants build
these projects, assisted by the UdK students. From the developing projects,
ideas and problems are chosen to be discussed centrally. The fifth day is
used to finish the projects and to do a final presentation of the work for a
small invited audience. A selection of the workshop results is made for a
large-scale presentation to the main audience of the World Wide Video
Festival.

The (closed) workshop sessions take place from 11 AM till 5 PM, Monday 12
till Friday May 16 at the Passenger Terminal, Oostelijke Handelskade,
Amsterdam.
The results of the workshop will be presented to the public on Saturday May
17.
