Akron, Ohio-April 14, 2003-Akron, Ohio media artist/educator Seth Thompson
and Miami, Florida based filmmaker/curator Humberto Ramirez collaborated to
create an innovative Web-based video exhibition that invites viewer
participation. Subtropics 03 Videos On-line presents a cross section of
video producers interested in art as a vehicle of cultural discourse.
Curator Humberto Ramirez selected works that address such issues as
patriotism, colonialism, nationalism, and AIDS. Challenging in nature,
these videos attempt to question current positions on these subjects. He
states, "The importance of these videos is that they do not retreat into the
facile realm of the "experimental" and "abstract" but rather use the
abilities of the medium to directly communicate and polemicize.
Artists included are: Gregg Bordowitz, John Distefano, Elizabeth Hall, Mary
Ann Toman, Craig Snyder, Deva Eveland and Jason Simon.
Seth Thompson comments, "No longer is an exhibition restricted to a physical
location with the advent of the World Wide Web. With a computer and
Internet access, artists, curators and audience can globally interact and
generate dialogue. This site was created to provide a venue for politically
and socially motivated videos and to encourage discourse on related
contemporary issues ."
The exhibition is co-produced by Wigged Productions (http://www.wigged.net),
Akron, Ohio and Subtropics New Music Festival (http://www.subtropics.org),
Miami, Florida.
