THE LIVERPOOL BIENNIAL
http://www.biennial.org.uk
ABOUT LIBERARTI:
LIBERARTI is an open exhibition of non-monetary artworks to be held in
Liverpool from October 10th - December 1st 2002. The project is an
official participant in the Liverpool Biennial. All events are free of

of the public can register.
"LIBERARTI discards the curatorial process in favour of a self-elected,
somewhat anti-authoritarian approach. This juxtaposition produces an
unusually cohesive agenda for the Big Fight: - Art vs. Anti-art...."
The Vacuum @ editorial antics, SW - September Issue 2002
LIBERARTI follows on from the success of FREEMANIFESTA and other Free
Festival events. LIBERARTI is an extension of NY Artist Sal Randolph's
original idea:
"It is intended as an experiment in creating a social network of artists,
a gift economy that can act as an alternative to traditional forms of
exhibition in commercial and institutional contexts".
Continued by Karen Eliot as an experiment in social and cultural
innovation: LIBERARTI seeks to challenge the role of both audience and
protagonist.

INVISIBLE MAPS: PAUL CATANESE
We endlessly create markers, signs, roadways and paths which define where
we can go and how we may arrive there. When we travel, our choices become
a narration, a grouping of letters, words and sentences. With every
gesture we write novels, and every stroll fills volumes of encyclopedia.
Even the simplest acts are ones which create marvelous and unknowable
relationships - invisible realities that linger in the atmosphere with the
smell of electricity. http://www.skeletonmoon.com/maps.html

KILLTHEPRESIDENT.ORG: RYAN GIBSON & MASON DIXON
The site's point of entry poses an undeniable threat to any fanatic or
ideologue who can not tolerate opposing viewpoints, and as such the site
becomes a haven for uncomfortable discourse aimed at cultural growth. The
nodes of expression range in subject from digitally manipulated imagery to
computer games, transgender to electronic warfare, animation to
installation, pornography to politics. Each is presented in a way that
parallels the intent of its message; some focusing on educating, others on
documenting, while others contribute artistic material to the use's life
through downloadable media and web-based applications.

LASTE:NACH:2: DAVID GOLUMBIA
April 13, 2002 was the last night that the twin beams of light near the
World Trade Center/Ground Zero site were on display. On every other night,
the lights were turned off at midnight. On the final night (the night of
April 12/morning of April 13), the lights were left on until morning.
Between 1:43am and 2:51am I took a series of digital photographs in a loop
around Manhattan, driving directly by the light generator and then walking
back up through and around the lights. The resulting presentation,
assembled in line with Eryk Salvaggio's "Six Rules for Internet Art" (to
many of which the artist had already been adhering as good working
principles), resembles a "traditional" photo album, but responds to user
interaction with unexpected behaviors that provide cultural and textual
refractions on the sequence of images. http://uiuuii.com/las2/

LIFESTYLE: SANTE SCARDILLO
LIFESTYLE confronts the impact of advertising on social behavior. The
ultimate goal of brand domination defines a tool of cultural colonization
with implications and objectives beyond simple economics. Global ad
campaigns no longer advertise the mere object exchanged for currency: it
is the image as mirror, the marketing of the imaginary inclusion in the
³elite² who can appreciate the subtleties of a constellation made of
objects that imply a life style. No longer just incidental to the medium,
the message is the Message. LIFESTYLE satirizes, exposes and questions the
Message of advertising, juxtaposing it to the broader picture of societal
values. Download images from:

LOS DIAS Y LAS NOCHES DE LOS MUERTOS: DOLL YOKO & MG vs Rok
LOS DIAS Y LAS NOCHES DE LOS MUERTOS is a ghost work of counter-memories,
tracing thresholds of impossibilities beyond the blank gaze of
pan-capitalism. A drifting carnival of five micro-stages recombines the
newest blue-eyed sons of star wars, top-sight trajectories of power and
capital, and the living dead who name themselves Zapatistas.

MELODRAMA NO.2: ANDREA FLAMINI
Melodrama No. 2 photos, video stills, sounds - Interactive video, color.
2001 "The narrative pressures the surface of reality". [Peter Brooks: The
Melodramatic Imagination (1976).] Melodrama No.2 is an interactive video
which makes use of scripting to compose and randomly select visuals and
sounds. The viewer can participate in the piece by composing visuals and
sounds within given parameters set by the artist. To fully explore the
work the user should hover slowly on the gray patterns. In addition,
waiting idly on some pictures triggers additional narratives.

NEVER WAKE UP: AGRICOLA DE COLOGNE
Flash movie created by media artist Agricola de Cologne. It is based on
the artist's poem of the same name. Subject: Loss of identity: Soldiers
become distorted, veterans of war are not able to be reintegrated in
society. The poem/movie uses some fundamental images: The soldier=
metaphor for the human individual. War=metaphor for life, respectively the
fights of all day life. Veteran of War=the human being who can not rid of
the Shadows of the Past.

NO MEMORY: VALERY GRANCHER
"Heart Time // Time heat" is a new kind of human mirror: This mirror is
dealing with new kind of time.
What should be universal time ? the actual one regulated by GMT ? But how
this time may work if someone is travelling from Earth to Mars, or through
universe toward another galaxy? is this scale based on night and day may
have a meaning in this context ? I guess not ! so what is the solution ?
There is one: there is a specific dynamic time scale for each human.

NOFOCUS: NICOLAE COMANESCU, EUGEN GUSTEA, DILMANA IORDANOVA, MIHAELA
KAVDANSKA
NOFOCUS is a five level project. _The first level: nofocus is a
meaningfully and a very clear collection of obscure, unclear, vague,
indistinct, incomprehensible things. It is a collaborative project based
on the exploration of the nofocus field (nofocus images -still and
moving-, nofocus information, histories, current news, thinking, theories,
behavior, attitudes and politics). Nofocus is an anthological domain
filled with all stuff from artists working in all media. Or no artists.

NOT TV: EMILY WEBBER
not TV is an art based live streaming web site, this means that we can
show video, performance and sound work live or pre-recorded over the
Internet. We were created as an alternative to the art gallery in which to
show works, the space is not used as an online catalogue, but rather a
virtual art space. The launch of not TV was December 2000. Not TV is web
cast to be viewed on a 56k modem or above, this means that it can be
viewed at home on a standard connection, with software that is free to
download from the internet. not TV is accepting submissions of web based
work that is around the theme of new media and exists mainly on the web,
any info can be obtained by emailing Emily Webber. http://www.not-tv.org/

NY9202: ALEXANDRA REILL
an online collage referring to ongoing war nyc / vienna / 1992 / 2002
NY9202 relates to the catastrophy of 11 / 09 / 02 and its consequences as
an seemingly unending conflict between two old and redundant views of
life, as an ongoing war of the rich for power and capital and a war of the
poor for equal rights, freedom of belief and stable economics. during a
visit of N.Y.C. in 1992 a collage book of collected materials from
commercials combined with notes, markers' drawings and acrylic paintings
relating to daily / normal life and characteristic aspects of N.Y.C.
emerged. the ongoing war between the U.S. and the muslim world transforms
the look at life in N.Y.C. and everybody's life in the western world.
images of poverty and suffering, of war and hunger do not bear any
gimmicks or decoration and cannot be erased from anybody's mind. Daily
life is not the same any more kanonmedia.com cannot believe in warfare but
definitely believes in peaceful solutions and equal human rights for
everybody and every culture. NY9202 is meant to be a piece expressing deep
concern about global developments and raising a voice for peace and
against war. http://www.kanonmedia.com/portfolio/nyc9202.htm

ONMOUSEOVER-ONMOUSEOUT: LUIGIA CARDARELLI
The movement of the mouse on the image, through javascript, gives dynamism

itself in the original space of the net.

PHOTOMONTAGE: SHIRIN KOULADJIE
We unconsciously demand the application of certain elementary principles
in the arrangements which surround us in daily life. These principles are
so simple that when they are complied with, one is not even aware of the
source of one's satisfaction. On the other hand the violation of these
simple principles will give rise to a feeling of disappointment which is
none the less actual for being, sometimes, quite undefinable. The success
of each project in my site, photomontage.com depends in a measure on
correct balance in every sense this medium - digital art/web site - has to
offer. What I build is a collage or an assemblage of interrelated short
art pieces that although seemingly detached from each other, in whole,
express a complete thought or statement. My site remains in a "work in
progress". http://www.photomontage.com/

PICTURE RUBBLE: RAINER GANAHL
"Picture rubble / raw material" is what it is: photographed television
images and freeze-frames of electronic footage released from news
organization, media monopolies and the Pentagon. The content of the images
is the current "War on Terrorism:" the hunt for Bin Laden and the bombing
of Afghanistan. Frequently, what we see in the "live,", "in depth," or
"special" reports are bombed buildings, tanks, airplanes, rubble,
accompanied by the talking heads of the spin doctors, who explain, justify
and speculate on this war, its means and measures.

PORTRAIT OF THE ARTIST AS A HOME PAGE: PORTRAIT OF THE ARTIST AS A HOME
PAGE
"Portrait of the Artist as a Home Page" examines the easy narcissism of
the internet. Using myriad personal homepages as its source material,
"Portrait..." can be thought of as a documentary of the home page genre.
Text colors, background images, and most importantly the images themselves
are all culled from actual home pages and websites. These multiple
portraits illuminate and reconstruct self-presentation on the internet.

TIMESCAPE: REYNALD DROUHIN
Can the Internet be exhibited? 24 hours a day search engines seek
pictures on the internet. "Timescape" presents a glimpse into these
searches as they happen, in real time. The Timescape landscapes appear as
fleeting electronic canvases through an accumulation of random
photographic mosaics. The contents of the landscapes are different with
every new connection and each time the page is refreshed. According to the
time of day, a generic grid will appear...it's up to the user to define
the elements in the matrix. Appropriation and distraction come into play
in this project, there is little if any interactivity involved.
Observation and contemplation are paramount; watching the evolution of a
landscape as it contructs itself. Occasionally the flux of images will be
punctuated by an error window further reducing the interactivty of the
experience. This "Real-Time Landscape" refreshes itself each hour. The
entire "Timescape" tableaux is replaced with new images emphasizing the
ephemeral nature of the actual landscape you find yourself in.

THE ZERO : CHRISTINA RAY
In the mid-1950's, American artist I. Rice Pereira wrote a short book
entitled 'The Nature of Space.' In it she explained the apprehension of
space as an attribute of consciousness, and specified an irrational, or
unknowable, spatial quantity which she called 'the zero.' This project is
about collecting known spaces and, through re-arrangement, generating
unknown or 'zero' spaces impossible to describe logically. In December of
2001, I sent an email to friends requesting that they send me descriptions
of places, either from books or from their own memories. I collected about
150 sentences, divided them into fragments and entered them into a
database with identification numbers for each fragment. A randomly
selected group of these numbers has been inserted into each photograph.
Clicking on numbers in different areas of the image causes a sort of poem
to emerge. Each image has many possible combinations, all of which in some
way describe a location. I like to think that throughout history memories
and stories of places have been accumulating in space like a dust cloud of
numerical data or an invisible hieroglyphics. The stories are always there
to be decoded and re-generated, but they still remain as elusive as the
zero. http://www.glowlab.com/thezero.html
