[it's not so long ago that Jean-Jacques Lebel said that he does not plan to build
a website for polyphonix...;) but luckily he has changed his mind and http://www.polyphonix.org
will hopefully become such an important resourse of direct and sound poetry, performance, and video
of the 80's,and 90's as the ubuweb. the polyphonix nomad festival series started in 1979 - this was
the year when ars electronica also started in linz, and it is interesting to see that early ae  was also
centered around topics of literature, for instance in 1980 among others Alain Robbe Grillet and Gerhard Rühm had 
presentations about sound and image in literature. once ae established a biennial, it slowly took off in the direction
of technology and industry driven art and lost contact with the field of literature - whereas Polyphonix always remained a 
festival of free expression in the domains of literature, visual arts, video, music, new media. the festival presented 
hundreds of artist in different locations of the world, Paris, Montreal, San Francisco, New York, Milano, Parma, 
Rome, just to name a few, and in East Europe as well, at Szeged, Budapest and Cetinje in Montenegro 
(this particular edition of Polyphonix associated with the Montenegro Biennial  became part of oral 
east european legends). 
Opening the historical Polyphonix festival files one traces back the contacts between 
beat poets, Fluxus members, sound poets, computer artists, performance 
artists, videomakers. The festival featured early work of the OULIPO group (Ouvroir de Littérature Potentielle), and
it was one of the main promoting channel of early computer generated poetry [it was the Hungarian-French poet 
Tibor Papp who realised the complete electronic version of Raymond Queneau's  "Cent Mille Milliards de Poèmes", 
and it was at Polyphonix 5 in  1985 during the festival Polyphonix 5 that Tibor Papp presented the first french animated 
programmed poem, created on Atari: "Les très riches heures de l'ordinateur"]. It's would be difficult to enumerate all 
important projects presented at the different festivals, i mention only a favourite of mine: the zaum poetry cultivated 
by the Russian couple Rea Nikonova and Serge Segay still makes me laugh even ten years after the perfromance 
(whilst since Rea and Serge learned to live and avoid danger in totalitarian conditions, authorities targeted their son, 
and they arrested him in  when he was 20 - as it happened with many East European dissidents).
hopefully to the treasures that are already online, new works be added, and older files will be also completed. ab]

très nombreux poètes et artistes internationaux, y compris celles et ceux
dont les oeuvres sont exposées au CCS, figurent dans cet ouvrage.
