The Microwave International Media Art Festival, Hong Kong
30 Oct – 21 Dec 2002

The Microwave International Media Art Festival is coming and bringing you
lots of interesting and educational programmes!

The Microwave International Media Art Festival (MIMAF) 2002 held from
October 30 to December 21, is presented by the Leisure and Cultural Services
Department (LCSD), and organized by the Microwave Co. Ltd. and Videotage.
The MIMAF is sponsored by the Hong Kong Arts Development Council, Consul
General of Austria (Hong Kong), and Aves-Liesegang Projectors. Additional
support is provided by Mr.Chester Chu, "Digital Stadium", NHK (Japan
Broadcasting Corporation), Zentrum für Kunst und Medientechnologie
Karlsruhe, International \media\art\award 2001, Lux Centre, and Additive TV.

The MIMAF is an annual international video festival in Hong Kong aiming to
promote the cultural exchange and appreciation of new media art. The title
for this sixth annual MIMAF is “Tempøral Being” suggesting sound
rhythm, time and space, infinity, pattern of life, body and self. The
profound installation and interactive art projects create a new embodied
soundscapes to viewers in a much more intimate way than ever. Our
exhaustion, confusion and calm are interpreted by sensors, and our actions
and reactions are fed back to us in lag time. Living in an accelerated
century characterized by wars and waves of desire-inducing stimuli, these
exhibits heighten sensorial awareness, point our bodies to the electronic
occupation of art and architecture, as well as generate questions on what
and how internet and new technologies potentially changes our modes of
perception, representation and identification.

MIMAF includes artist-in-residence workshop, video screenings, seminars,
forums, musical performance and exhibition of the latest in new media art.
This year MIMAF is honored to invite Vuk Cosic(Slovenia), an internet art
pioneer and author of numerous net art projects, as the guest curator for
the Net Art Exhibition at Videotage’s studio. His critical selection on
artistic practice in internet articulates an exciting exploration of issues
that constellate around the World Wide Web and its users.

About 70 overseas and Hong Kong artists will participate in the video
screening and the exhibition. All invited overseas artists for the
exhibition have participated in the prestigious Arts Electronica Festival
(Austria). The honorary designer for the City Hall’s exhibition venue is
Chester Chu, architect.

The exhibition will feature interactive media art installations of “Rain
Dance” by Paul de Marinis(USA), “The Vistor: Living By Numbers” by Luc
Courchesne (Canada), “Sonic Pong” by Time’s Up (Austria), “co-ex
communication suite” by Yasu Santo & Francis Lam (Hong Kong), and
“Frontality” by Enoch Cheung (Hong Kong); video installation “Trembling
Time” by Yael Bartana (Israel); performance objects “Extended Arm”,
“Motion Prosthesis” and animation of “HEXAPOD” by Stelarc (Australia).

In addition to the exhibition, Stelarc will present a lecture demonstrating
his manifestos on 22nd November. Since 1970s Stelarc has conducted a series
of performances and installations, leading the way in the exploration of the
body, technology and culture. Through the lecture, Stelarc reminds us with
perhaps his most famous provocation – that the human body is obsolete.

MIMAF will present the most active local artists using new media. “Body
Brush” by Young Hay, Horace Ip and Alex Tang is an extra exhibition program
at the CityU Gallery, City University of Hong Kong. It has won the honorary
mention interactive art in Prix Ars Electronica 2002 last month. On the
other hand, Yasu Santo & Francis Lam’s “co-ex communication suite”, Enoch
Cheung’s “Frontality”, and Terry Lai’s “Unit” (net art) are the
commissioned works for the MIMAF.

The seminar and forum, comprising artists, scholars, and critics from Hong
Kong and abroad, aim to advance the discourse between art and technology.
“On Air Forum” is curated by Leung Man Tao, the head of Ngau Pang Sue
Yuen. Local speakers include: Professor Hector Rodriguez, Phoebe Man,
Anthony Leung, Amy Chan, County Tam, Leung Mei Ping, Cheung Lik Kwang, Koon
Wai Pong, Mok Ka Leung and Leung Man Tao.

The international video screening “Being projected” curated by Jamsen Law
and Videotage exhibits the latest Japanese animation and computer graphics
from “Digital Stadium’, an on-going TV program presented by NHK, Japan
Broadcasting Coporation, international \media\ art \award 2001 from Zentrum
für Kunst und Medientechnologie Karlsruhe, and various stylish works
from Hong Kong and abroad.

MIMAF’s artist-in-residence is “Time’s Up” from Austria. Defining
themselves as a laboratory for the construction of experimental situations,
“Time’s Up” undertakes applied researches of our daily life. Their
members will host a series of workshops that will examine the real time
audio and image rendering.

(Ars Electronica
那(Luc Courchesne)(加拿大)的<旅人: 數字生活>(The Vistor: Living By
Number)、「時間到」(Time’s Up)(奧地利)的<奔放音頻>(Sonic Pong)、山藤
(Yael Bartana)

(The

(Prix Ars
