The book Stelarc - Political Prosthesis & Knowledge of the
Body, published by MKC, Maribor and its International
Festival of Computer Arts, and Maska, journal for
performance arts, Ljubljana, is the first comprehensive
book, a sort of monograph, on the work of Stelarc in the
world.

In the book the main projects by Stelarc, numerous
esthetical and historical points about these projects,
along with basic Stelarc texts and his historical
interventions in body, new media, virtual environments and
telematic arts are compiled and cataloged. The book opens
with three major texts by Stelarc, followed by a detailed
visual and textual presentation of his major projects, the
second part features essays about Stelarc work by
important theoreticians of new media and technology:
Arthur and Marilouise Kroker and Timothy Murray.

The idea of the book is first and foremost to provide
theoretical, philosophical and critical insight into
Stelarc's work, into his groundbreaking historical and
future visions of the body and new technology.

The book brings together a varied compendium of
texts/essays with a large number of visual materials and
information on Stelarc's work. The book also has an
accurate bio-data chronological overview of Stelarc's work,
although it does not pretend to be a document (the time of
documents are over), but a manifest-testament of Stelarc's
productive, inventive and pioneering investment and
approach to new media art.

The book attempts to provide a detailed overview of
Stelarc's state-of-the-art.

Stelarc is Principal Research Fellow, Digital Research
Unit, Department of Visual and Performing Arts at The
Nottingham Trent University. In 1997 he was appointed as an
Honorary Professor of Art and Robotics at Carnegie
Mellon University. In 2000 he was awarded an Honorary
Degree of Law by Monash University. His artwork is
represented by the Sherman Galleries in Sydney. Stelarc's
website URL is http://www.stelarc.va.com.au

Stelarc's work was for the first time presented in Slovenia
at Gallery Kapelica, Ljubljana in 1995. In Maribor
Stelarc's work was for the first time presented at the
International Festival of Computer Arts in 1996; he
is a frequent guest of the festival, and have acted as
well as a co-curator.

The book was realized in collaboration with Martin Bricelj,
designer of the book, Dean DeVos, English language editor,
Petra Pogorevc translator of the texts into Slovenian and
Emil Hrvatin, Editor in Chief, MASKA, Ljubljana.

In the book project participated as well Dragica Marinic
(the Director of MKC, Maribor) and Joze Slacek (the Chief
Organizer of the International Festival of Computer
Arts, MKC, Maribor).
