Eyestorm goes belly-up
There are buyers out there for the failed site

By Georgina Adam

LONDON. The online art sales site eyestorm, which offered multiples by
contemporary artists at prices from £100 to £5,000 has gone into
liquidation.

The brainchild of dot.comers Don Smith and David Grob, the firm surprised
many by its ability to stay afloat after many art-over-the-internet ventures
had gone belly-up. Eyestorm, "dedicated to opening up the world of
contemporary art to a global audience" had initiated a number of ventures
including a tie-up with the celebrated Magnum co-operative and the Saatchi
Gallery.

Recently the firm, finding it hard to make money with clicks despite its
beautifully-designed site, went bricks with two galleries, one in London and
one in New York.

However despite strong support from some monied investors including Charles
Schwab and Richard Kramlich, and the arrival of David Ross directly after
his sudden departure from SFMoMA, eyestorm just couldn't make money.

Now the liquidator, London firm B.D.O. Stoy Hayward, is looking for buyers
and claims it has lots of candidates.

if they can't sell contemporary art over the net as Photographs and
multiples, then who can.
