Long time no news from us!
Artists who wanted to participate in this year’s competition and visited our homepage were informed that the next call for submissions will be made in 2003. Those who clicked their way further along found out that there is an EU workshop and that this year’s festival will be organised by the Trans-Media-Akademie Hellerau, a registered society.
Here is a brief survey of this year’s events:

1.	Dresden transfers organisation of the CYNETart
2.	EU Workshop „Realtime and Presence“
3.	CYNETart_02realtime November 6-10, 2002
4.	Virtual Sound Environment: HOF-LAB June 20-30, 2002, every day from 9 pm
5.	Workshop in the Festspielhaus Hellerau July, 13-28, 2002

1.	Dresden transfers organisation of the CYNETart
The culture office of Dresden has commissioned the Trans-Media-Akademie Hellerau e.V. (TMA) to carry out the International Festival for Computer-Based Art – CYNETart – as well as the EU workshop “Realtime and Presence” from this year onwards. The contractual form is a public-private partnership in the field of media culture. The registered society TMA was founded last year by Dresden experts in the field of media art. Its chairwoman is Vera Kockot, chairwoman of the Albrecht-Dürer-Gesellschaft Nuremberg.

The contact persons for the CYNETart remain the same: project manager Dr Klaus Nicolai and organisation/competion Dorothea Kupsch (eidol at body-bytes.de / www.body-bytes.de).

2.	EU Workshop „Realtime & Presence“
Composition of virtual environments

Current technical developments enable more and more artists and information scientists to work with different systems which recognise visitors in the observed space and which transform different parameters such as speed of movement, duration of lingering, position into pictures or sounds. Works are created, in which pre-fabricated visual and sound material is not only triggered but in which visual and sound material is created and modified dynamically by different ways of movement. Of course, this form of interaction is also possible covering great distances via internet.

The EU Workshop “Realtime & Presence“ was applied for by the City of Dresden together with the partners Ars Electronica Center Linz and V2_Organisation Rotterdam. The workshop is part of the EU grant scheme "Kultur 2000" and it is the first project of the scheme realised under the overall charge of a Saxon institution. This year's thematic CYNETart is based on this workshop on the composition of virtual environments. It is funded by the European Commission in cooperation with the applicants and the county of Saxony with an overall budget of 140.000 Euro. The Trans-Media-Akademie Hellerau e.V. is going to support the Culture Office in the carrying out of this project.

Phase 0
First orientation brought the expert forum in Nuremberg in March 2002. There were composers, programmers, architects, artist –experts who already do interdisciplinary work. Here, different interface software was introduced.

The artists were encouraged to form cooperations and propose projects using interface software.

Workshop 1 – HOF-LAB
In order to test the “interface“ virtual sound and visual architecture and its visitors“ actions there will be the HOF-LAB during the Tanzwoche Dresden in June.

Workshop 2 – Festspielhaus Hellerau
In July, artists will be working mainly on the software-based aspects of the realisation of virtual environments.

Performances in the Festspielhaus Hellerau in Dresden
Exhibition November 7- 24, 2002 in the Kunst Haus Dresden

Presentation of EU Workshop results “Realtime & Presence“ and other projects connected with the theme

This year, artists, information scientists, and other researchers from Europe, America, and Asia are going to present the achievements of an international workshop dealing with the composition of sensitive interactive audio-visual spaces. Thus, the first thematic CYNETart will give an insight into an entirely new artistic field: virtual architectures can be transformed into real events of light and sound and connected via the internet by artists and visitors. The instalment of virtual environments in public places is also intended.

There is new art! It directly connects reality and virtuality, body and environment, movement, sound, visuals and space: Realtime & Presence
The project works with computer fabricated sound architectures, which design a real sound process through the movement of visitor or dancer.
Every night, the project will be based on new sound architectures or systems. Thus, observations can be made about the “attraction” or the “appeal to visitors” of the respective compositions.

The sound environment HOF-LAB is part of the international workshops "Realtime & Presence" of the City of Dresden in cooperation with the Ars Electronica Center Linz, the V2_Organisation Rotterdam, the Sächsisches Staatsministerium für Wissenschaft und Kunst (county ministry of arts and sciences), Kulturstiftung Sachsen (culture foundation), European Union, grant scheme “Kultur 2000” and the Trans-Media-Akademie Hellerau

5.	Workshop in the Festspielhaus Hellerau July, 13-28, 2002

This workshop is part of the phase in which the project drafts are realised. In this phase, existing software such as EyeCon or the HUMA system can be worked with and also extended by the programmers. The results of the HOF-LAB can be used for the realisation and in exchange among the participants different ideas can be tested and compared.
Suitable works for presentation in Linz, Dresden, and Rotterdam will be selected on the basis of the workshop results.
