Elisabeth Vellacott

An artist who came into her own later in life, there was a timeless,
enchanted quality to her icon-like paintings

The painter Elisabeth Vellacott, who has died aged 97, was spirited,
original and had her first solo show at 60. She got into her artistic stride
in her 70s, reached her prime around 80 and painted her last scintillating
picture aged 92. Her images of people in houses, gardens and landscapes have
a timeless and magical air - as if figures from early Italian frescoes had
changed their clothes and wandered into Cambridgeshire.
