Vol. 042: A Revolution of Fashion Shows?

by Ozaki Tetsuya

You have probably realized already that, although there is a "Fashion"
sub-category
on REALTOKYO's "Design" recommendation ("Picks") page, it is usually more or
less empty. The simple reason for this is that fashion shows are mostly
targeting
customers of fashion brands, and shows that are open to the general public
are rare.
It would obviously make not much sense to recommend events you can't attend
unless you carry an invitation card. There do exist shows that are no
closed events
(such as Chanel's spectacle at Ebisu Garden Place last year), but those are
still
exceptional cases.

We caught musician/artist Bo Whang from Korea for a mini interview while in
Tokyo
to prepare for her band Smacksoft's first live show in Japan.

Find her answers in the "Tokyo Visitors' Book" section, to access from the
Top page
or from the pull-down Menu.

The Present State of Butoh: Dance Festival JADE 2002

by Fukasawa Megumi

It has been already more than half a year since we heard of Furukawa Anzu's
death.
Furukawa, a Butoh dancer who started her career with the "Dance Love Machine"
group, moved to Germany in 1991 following an offer to work as a university
professor, and has since then been actively working on the promotion of
Butoh all
over in Europe. "Butoh" is now a term that is understood around the world,
and it
would certainly not be like that without the pioneering work of Yano
Hideyuki, the
shocking performances of Ohno Kazuo, and the efforts of Furukawa Anzu to
introduce the dance to overseas audiences. Presently there are still many
Japanese
Butoh dancers who chose a foreign country as their base of operations, and
in each
of those countries dancers who were influenced by them and inspired to start
exploring Butoh themselves aren't few.
