There is new art! It directly connects reality and virtuality, body and environment, movement, sound, visuals and space: Realtime & Presence. Movement becomes sound, sound becomes visual, visuals become light, light becomes language...
The workshop participants, artists, dancers, composers, programmers, and scienctists, cooperate interdisciplinarily to create computer fabricated virtual audio-visual architectures. These are transformed by the bodily movements of visitors or performance artists into singular audio-visual processes.
The development of sensitive virtual environments as a basis of interactive installations and performances will also be furthered in the coming years in the Hellerau laboratory which will be built by the Trans-Media-Akademie. The project “Realtime & Presence” is part of the EU grant scheme “Culture 2000” and it is the first project of the scheme realised under the overall charge of a Saxon institution.
Selected results of the work of about thirty participants of the workshop will be presented during the following festivals:
Ars Electronica Festival Linz September 07 to 12, 2002;
CYNETart_02realtime November 06 to 10, 2002;
Dutch Electronic Art Festival Rotterdam February 25 to März 05, 2003

During the workshop, there will be public presentations of projects in their current work stadium in the Festspielhaus Hellerau
on Friday, July 19, 2002, 8 pm and
on Saturday, July 27, 2002, 8 pm.
Admission free!

A microscope session consisting of the live act PERSON (Spezialmaterial, Zürich) and of microscope visuals (Dresden) will be
on Friday, July 26, 2002, 9 pm in the Festspielhaus Hellerau

Realtime & Presence –
Festspielhaus Hellerau turns into lab for computer-based experience of human body

>From July 14 to 28, 2002, the Festspielhaus Hellerau will turn into a huge and singular laboratory. A team of more than thirty media artists, composers, architects, choreographers, dancers, information scientists, technicians, philosophers and researchers in the field of cultural studies is going to investigate new aspects of human action in virtual environments, using practical experiments for new insights. The workshop “Realtime & Presence” is part of the EU project titled alike which is organised under the overall charge of the City of Dresden in cooperation with the Trans-Media-Akademie Hellerau e.V., the Ars Electronica Center Linz, and the V2_Organisation in Rotterdam. Since April, the participants of the workshop have been communicating via the internet forum for digital cultures “netzspannung.org” which is provided for selected artistic projects by MARS Exploratory Media Lab at the Fraunhofer Institute of Media Communication Bonn.

Here, the highly explosive question as to the nature of the presence of human being, of human life in the here and now is raised. And this questioning corresponds with the possibility of a general access to extremely fast computers and their networking: The patterns of traditionalistic lingering in the past or fictional projection into the future have definitively come into crisis. The backward glances as well as those forward have lost their idealised innocence just as the consumption of pictures, projections, and TV broadcasts. Modern digital information technologies enable us to operate in real-time. It is to decide whether this techno-medial real-time overruns, dissolves, and occupies the human here and now or whether it leads (or lures) us into a new human awareness of being, or, as it is, of presence.

In order to investigate this question, competent participants from Germany, The Netherlands, Switzerland, France, Austria, Turkey, and the US will be operating with different sensors which build a bridge between actual human movements in real space and virtually configured audio-visual architectures. In these artistically designed virtual environments, the camera – the machine of objectification, visual generation, and observation in the 20th century – is imbued with the culturally new function of a sensor which scans complex bodily movements. Due to the connection of camera images and virtual sound architectures, the movements can be experienced somewhat like a mirror image in dynamic sound events.

The use of the camera as an interface between the human body and its qualities of movement and expression perceptible audio-visually and in real-time is at the same time a direct connection to the worldwide noted investigations of the human body and its movements which were undertaken in Dresden at the beginning of the 20th century. Be it Emile Jaques-Dalcroze, Gret Palucca or Mary Wigman, the overall aim, then and today, is a changed awareness of the human body and with it a changed awareness of living presence in space and time. In this context, the workshop sees itself as a consistent continuation of the founding idea of the Festspielhaus Hellerau embedded in the issues of current artistic, scientific, and technical developments.

date: 26.07.02
start: 21 Uhr
admission charge: voluntary contribution
location: Festspielhaus Dresden Hellerau
There will be a microscope session during the international workshop “Realtime & Presence”. We are happy to present the Zürich label SPEZIALMATERIAL, who will perform the music.
The “PERSON” project is performed by Mischa Eberli together with Dominik Brun from the new SPEZIALMATERIAL label. The musical publications range from abstract sound art to medium phase/Autechre/electronic. Dodgy beat structures are fractured by complex soundscapes.
They are supported visually by the microscope guys from Dresden. microscope is a group of young people working with the generation of visuals from sounds.
