Call for Contributions 'Bodiescapes' - Performance Research

Performance Research
Vol. 8  No. 2  (Summer 2003)

'Bodiescapes' will be the second issue of Performance Research, Vol.8,
Nos.1-4, 2003 which explores the body and the senses in performance in
four related issues: 'On Voices', 'Bodiescapes' 'On Smell' and
'Moving Bodies' (tbc). The issue is jointly edited by Ric Allsopp -
editor and co-founder of 'Performance Research', Dartington College of
Arts, UK; and guest editor Peter M. Boenisch - Institute for Theatre
Studies, Ludwig-Maximilians-University Munich, Germany.

Deadlines are as follows:
Proposals: July 29th 2002
Draft manuscripts: September 27th, 2002
Finalized material: November 15th, 2002
Publication Date: June 2003.

'Bodiescapes' investigates the body of the performer and of the
spectator in, around and at performance. The issue will highlight three
central aspects of the body in performance:
* 'Body Matters' - putting forward a theoretical framework, applying and
weighing up for example deconstructivist, postmodern, semiotic or
phenomenological  approaches;
* 'Body (Re)Members' - focusing practically on the (non-)moving body, on
ideologies of physical theatre training as well as insight from practice
based research;
* 'Body Shapes / Body Escapes?' - opening up the perspective to
historical, contemporary, political and performative case studies on
corporeality.

We invite academics and practitioners working in the field to
contribute on aspects of the body, movement and physicality in
performance ranging from contemporary performance and its analysis to
historical facets, from 'physical' drama productions to dance, mime, and
performance theatre.

Contributions might explore:
* interconnections and/or translations between 'body signs', verbal
signs and other theatrical sign systems or between kinaesthetic
sensation and visual/theatrical representation;
* aspects of phenomenological experience, the textuality of physicality,
notions of 'embodiment' as well as the body's alienation;
* physicality in a mediatized society, the performer's body as an
archive of cultural memory, historical and/or extra-cultural
predecessors and reference points of current physical performance;
* the living and moving body as a link between theatrical presence,
presentation and representation;
* the body's potential for subversion, resistance or its role as market
value in late-capitalist economy, and its political implications;
* the role of theatre and performance studies: how do (or how should)
practitioners and academics, theatre and theory treat and reflect on
these different 'bodiescapes'?

We are looking for - and looking forward to - submissions from any
area of performance research, practice and scholarship. The editors also
invite responses to previous contributions on related subjects published
in PR, and especially welcome proposals for both textual and visual work
which makes use of the resources of the page. We are interested not only
in conventional academic papers, but in performance scores and other
documents, interviews, discussions, collaborations between artists and
academics; also critical review essays of performances and publications.
