transmediale.02 awards: The Winner is ...

At the 15th transmediale, the international media art festival in Berlin, this year’s prizes for the best works in the competition were awarded. A jury made up of
international media experts gave prizes in three categories, Image, Interaction and Software, worth 5.000 Euro each. The winners were announced at the award
ceremony on February 9, 2002 in Haus der Kulturen der Welt.

AWARD IMAGE
Two works share the award in the category Image: Harald Holba’s (at) "Pool_2" and Jocelyn Roberts’ (ca) "L´Invention des animaux". The jury assessed Holba's
"Pool_2" as an outstanding example for the manifoldness of the new, digital image. "Pool_2" is a bewildering 3-D animation mixing simultation and reality in the
minimalistic ambience of a swiming pool. Roberts "L´Invention des animaux" convinced as an evident commentary of digital aethetics. The algorythmically navigated
movement of an airplane against the blue sky demonstrates what lacked most of the submitted works: self-irony and comical distance.

AWARD INTERACTION
Univocal was the jury’s statement in the category Interaction: "...seine hohle Form..." by Palindrome (us/de) is a performance in which the dancer produces his own
soundtrack in real-time. The jury noted the highly developed cybernetic relationship, which creates an intense aesthetic experience for the audience.

AWARD SOFTWARE
In the category Software two works share the prize, too: Local Area Network (ch) with "TraceNoizer - Disinformation on Demand" and Alex McLean’s (gb)
"forkbomb.pl". The jury awarded "TraceNoizer" as a Frankensteinian system, which lures one’s identity in the www to an unrecognizable condition. McLean’s
'forkbomb.pl' is a variation of a famous computer science exercise, which suffocates the computer with its own processes. 'forkbomb.pl' was awarded as a crafted
code which is transformed into an art of technical transgression.
