No Ghost Just a Shell was initiated when French artists and frequent
collaborators Pierre Huyghe and Phillippe Parreno paid a visit to an
agency that produces and sells animated stock characters. Anyone, from
animators to advertisers, can go to these agencies and, in essence, buy
an actor. The artists bought a Japanese manga character by the name of
Annlee. Huyghe and Parreno used the original computer file as a
starting point for an extended exhibition process in which several
artists have been asked to appropriate the character and make a short
digital animation that brings Annlee to life. For the presentation at
SFMOMA [San Francisco Museum of Mordern Art http://www.sfmoma.org/],
the artists will bring together a number of artworks in several media
that center on Annlee

SAN FRANCISCO -- At his day job, Mark Napier develops software for
Reuters -- but he dreams of a time when he can do his artwork full
time.
"It used to be that I was trying to get recognized," he said over the
phone from New York. "Now I'm trying to make it a career."
Napier, 38, has helped pioneer the emerging medium of Internet art,
garnering critical praise for "Graphic Jam [no longer active]," an
interactive drawing program, and "Shredder," which mashes up Web pages
into cryptic collages.

SAN FRANCISCO -- The San Francisco Museum of Modern Art has set up a
new, $50,000 annual prize for Internet art, one of the largest single
awards for online art and media in the world, officials said on
Thursday.

The SFMOMA [http://www.sfmoma.org/] Webby Prize for Excellence in
Online Art will be awarded to an artist or artists "for a body of work
whose primary focus is to be experienced online and that explores and
expands the distinctive capacity of the online medium," a museum
statement said.
