space station," Poindexter says. Formerly assigned at Naval Air Station
Oceana in Virginia Beach, Va., he and his wife, Lisa, and their two
sons, Zachary and Samuel, have moved to Houston. Poindexter received
his master's degree from the Naval post-graduate school in Monterey,

Episcopal Priest Becomes Catholic Laywoman by Stephen Ryan

August 01, 2001 / Two years ago, the wife of Rear Admiral John
Poindexter - who was President Reagan’s national security adviser -
ended her 13 years as an Episcopal priest.
Linda Poindexter became Catholic. She spoke with Register correspondent
Stephen Ryan. Your first "conversion" was from the Disciples of Christ
Church to the Episcopalian Church.
Stephen Ryan (SR): How did that come about?
Linda Poindexter:
John and I married in 1958. He had graduated the Naval Academy. The
Protestant chapel services the Midshipmen attended were always
according to the Episcopal Book of Common Prayer. You could attend
another church in town, but at the Navy chapel the Protestant service
was Episcopal.
Back then, attendance at some service was mandatory. I was down there
most weekends when we were dating so I’d become quite accustomed to the
services by the time we were married.
John was raised a Methodist, so we looked at several churches when we
married and quickly settled on the Episcopal Church, primarily for the
liturgical part of the worship.
(Episcopal Church is the church of choice for power republican's)

John Poindexter declared in July of 1987 that he had never told Reagan
about the diversion of funds to the contras, wishing to "provide some
future deniability,"
http://www.cs.ncl.ac.uk/old/people/chris.holt/home.informal/bar/corsair.afdq/contra.cards/35.html
Poindexter testified that he had made a "very deliberate decision not
to ask the President" about the diversion of missile profits to the
contras in order to "provide some future deniability for the President
if it ever leaked out." He further stated that Reagan would have
approved if he had ever been asked. The following day, after Reagan
announced that he would not have approved, Poindexter explained that
"that is the whole idea of deniability."
ARI FLEISCHER: Let me just say about Admiral Poindexter, Admiral
Poindexter is somebody who this administration thinks is an outstanding
American and an outstanding citizen who has done a very good job in
what he has done for our country, serving in the military.
(He did an excellent job protecting W's father, George Senior)

Poindexter, a Naval Commander, began thinking about becoming an
astronaut after hearing Admiral Truly speak to his NROTC class at Tech.
After graduating in 1986 with an undergraduate degree in aerospace
engineering, Poindexter joined the Navy. He served in the Gulf War and
has piloted a wide range of aircraft including F-18s. In 1998,
Poindexter joined the space program. He had never considered the
program before until Truly encouraged him to apply. He said he
encourages all students to consider working in the space field because
"it's a very exciting and motivating place to be." Poindexter is a
candidate for a future mission and he expects to launch in the next two
to three years.

---------------------------------
A recurring criticism of the National Security Council, including the
period in which Poindexter was its head, is that despite having been
created as an advisory body, its staff assumes operational functions.
On that subject, Poindexter has said:
Words of wisdom from the admiral:
http://www.thedubyareport.com/poindexter.html
"I think it's a mistake to rule it out just as I think it's a mistake
for there to be an executive order that says that we wont assassinate
bad actors. I'ts not suggesting that we should, but I think it's always
a mistake to say that you're not going to do something. You need to
leave the question mark out there. It provides you much more leverage.
I think the same thing is true of a more operational role for the NSC
staff than is sometimes traditional. Sometimes there are circumstances
when you're dealing with very complex problems where there are seldom
right answers and the issues are all shades of gray not black or white.
And so you want to preserve for the president the maximum amount of
flexibility so that he's got lots of options to address all kinds of
problems. And I think if that means, as we thought it did during our
time, that somebody on the NSC staff has to take a more operational
role then I don't see any problem with that.
In the Iran arms deal, the State Department did not want to do what the
president wanted, and in the funneling of support to the Contras in
Nicaragua, Congress had prohibited some agencies (though not explicitly
the NSA) from doing what the administration thought was right. So the
NSC took on an operational role to execute the presidential
directives."
Poindexter maintains that this is not technically true in the case of
the sale of arms to Iran, because the CIA was given that
responsibility, and contracted with a third party who "happened" also
to be the same person the NSC was using to provide arms to the Contras.

Helen Thomas Ari, why would this administration choose a man for
couterterrorism who is so associated with the dark side of the Iran
Contra scandal, Admiral Poindexter?
MR. FLEISCHER: When you say, choose him for counterterrorism, can you
be more specific?
Q He's in the Pentagon, he's been appointed head of DARPA, which is
a counterterrorist office, developing plans, demonstrations with
information.
MR. FLEISCHER: I'm not aware of any appointment.
Q Yet.
MR. FLEISCHER: Let me just say about Admiral Poindexter, Admiral
Poindexter is somebody who this administration thinks is an outstanding
American and an outstanding citizen who has done a very good job in
what he has done for our country, serving in the military.
Q How can you say that, when he told Colonel North to lie?
MR. FLEISCHER: Helen, I think your views on Iran Contra are
well-known, but the President does believe that Admiral Poindexter
served --
Q It isn't my view, this is the prosecutor for the United States.
MR. FLEISCHER: I understand. The President thinks that Admiral
Poindexter has served our nation very well.
Q Really?
MR. FLEISCHER: That's the President's thoughts.
Q Do you know his record?
MR. FLEISCHER: I'm sure you will inform me.
Q I don't have to, all you have to do is look it up.

"Why, for example, is their $269,700 Rockville, Md., house

Shouldn't a Reagan conspirator be able to afford repainting every

Pentagon Plans a Computer System That Would Peek at Personal Data of
Americans
By John Markoff
>From the New York Times
The Pentagon is constructing a computer system that could create a
vast electronic dragnet, searching for personal information as part of
the hunt for terrorists around the globe — including the United States.
As the director of the effort, Vice Adm. John M. Poindexter, has
described the system in Pentagon documents and in speeches, it will
provide intelligence analysts and law enforcement officials with
instant access to information from Internet mail and calling records
to credit card and banking transactions and travel documents,
without a search warrant.
Historically, military and intelligence agencies have not been
permitted
to spy on Americans without extraordinary legal authorization. But
Admiral
Poindexter, the former national security adviser in the Reagan
administration,
has argued that the government needs broad new powers to process,
store and mine billions of minute details of electronic life in the
United States.
Admiral Poindexter, who has described the plan in public documents and
speeches
but declined to be interviewed, has said that the government needs to
"break down the stovepipes" that separate commercial and government
databases,
allowing teams of intelligence agency analysts to hunt for hidden
patterns of activity with powerful computers.

Admiral John Marlan Poindexter
'National Security Advisor'
John Marlan Poindexter - born in Washington, Ind. on August 12th, 1936
- a vice admiral in the U.S. Navy, succeeded Robert C. McFarlane as
President Ronald Reagan's national security adviser in December 1985.
He held that post until November 1986, when he resigned following
disclosures of his role in the Iran-Contra Affair. In July 1987,
testifying before U.S. House and Senate committees investigating the
scandal, Admiral Poindexter declared that he had authorized the
diversion of funds to the contras but that he had deliberately not
informed President Reagan of his action.
Poindexter attended the U.S. Naval Academy, graduating first in his
class of 1958; he had the further distinction of being the brigade
commander of his class. In 1964 he earned a Ph.D. in nuclear physics
from the California Institute of Technology, where he studied under
Nobel laureate Rudolph Mossbauer. During his career in the Navy, he
commanded the guided missile cruiser England and a squadron of
destroyers. He saw duty in the Western Pacific, Indian Ocean, and South
Pacific. From 1971 to 1978, Admiral Poindexter made his mark as an aide
to the secretary of the Navy and the chief of naval operations. For the
next three years he served as the deputy chief of naval education and
training, moving on to the National Security Council (NSC) in 1981.
Prior to being named national security adviser, he served as the deputy
to McFarlane, heading the NSC's "crisis pre-planning group." In that
capacity, he played a central role in the administration's handling of
the "Achille Lauro" hijacking in October 1985 and other terrorist
incidents. Following the resignation of McFarlane, Poindexter became
national security adviser on December 4, 1985. In this post he played a
key role in the covert sale of U.S. armaments to the government of
Iran, the negotiations for release of Americans held hostage by
terrorists, and the diversion of funds from the arms sales to support
the contra guerrillas in Nicaragua. Following public revelation of
these events, President Reagan accepted Poindexter's resignation on
November 25, 1986.
In later testimony before the joint Congressional committee
investigating the situation, Poindexter declared in July of 1987 that
he had never told Reagan about the diversion of funds to the contras,
wishing to "provide some future deniability," presumably to protect the
president from any possible negative consequences of the arms scandal.
Poindexter officially resigned from the Navy on September 29th, 1987.
On March 8th, 1990, Poindexter was brought to trial in Washington,
D.C., on five criminal charges, including conspiracy, obstruction of
Congress, and making false statements to Congress. On April 7th,
Poindexter was found guilty on all five charges, and he was sentenced,
on June 11th , to six months in prison. Poindexter appealed the
conviction, and on November 15th, 1991, a federal appeals court panel
reversed the conviction

In the seventies, while George Bush Sr. was in the wings for the CIA
Directorship, Richard Mellon Scaife ran Forum World Features, a CIA
front for a European propaganda operation. There are also reports that
Scaife was likely involved in the Heritage Foundation's funding of
Iran-Contra, along with Heritage President Edwin Feulner. Contrary to
what he still declares to this day, then-Vice President Bush Sr. was
clearly "in the loop" of Iran-Contra, as Defense Secretary Caspar
Weinberger's notes demonstrated. Furthermore, Admiral John Poindexter
claimed that he conferred directly with Bush about the Iran-Contra
scheme. Also, Bush and his assistant Donald Gregg communicated
regularly with Felix Rodriguez, the notorious ex-CIA agent at the heart
of the Contra Supply operation [See Lawrence Walsh's "Firewall", W.W.
Norton & Co., 1997; pp. 271-272]. In recent years, the CIA Inspector
General's Report confirmed that the Contras were trafficking in
cocaine, under the watch of Oliver North and the CIA [3] . There is
strong evidence that the Contras used North's planes (financed in part
by Joe Coors) for their drug-running. Although a Congressional
investigation into Contra-Cocaine was recently concluded, there remain
lingering questions about the role North's team and the CIA played in
this enterprise.

EXPERIENCE:
Poindexter was commisioned following graduation from the Georgia
Institute of Technology in 1986. After a short tour of duty at the
Hypervelocity Wind Tunnel Facility, Naval Surface Weapons Center, White
Oak, Maryland, Poindexter reported for flight training in Pensacola,
Florida. He was designated a Naval Aviator in 1988 and reported to
Fighter Squadron 124, Naval Air Station Miramar, California, for
transition to the F-14 Tomcat. Following his initial training,
Poindexter was assigned to Fighter Squadron 211, also at Miramar, and
made two deployments to the Arabian Gulf during Operations Desert Storm
and Southern Watch. While attached to VF-211, Poindexter was designated
as a Wing Qualified Landing Signal Officer. During his second
deployment in 1993, he was selected to attend the Naval Postgraduate
School/U.S. Naval Test Pilot School Cooperative Program. Following
graduation in December 1995, Poindexter was assigned as a Test Pilot
and Project Officer at the Naval Strike Aircraft Test Squadron (NSATS),
Naval Air Station (NAS) Patuxent River, Maryland. While at NSATS,
Poindexter was assigned as the lead test pilot for the F-14 Digital
Flight Control System where he logged the first carrier landing and
catapult launch of an F-14 with the upgraded flight controls. He also
flew numerous high angle of attack/departure tests, weapons separation
tests and carrier suitability trials. Following his tour at Patuxent
River, Poindexter reported to Fighter Squadron 32, NAS Oceana, Virginia
where he was serving as a department head when he was selected for
Astronaut training.
Poindexter has more than 2,000 hours in over 30 aircraft types and has
logged over 450 carrier landings.
