2 PhD Studentships are available in connection with an AHRB-funded
research project on "The European Avantgarde". The project explores
relationships between avantgarde and neo-avantgarde manifestations in
fine art, literature and cinema and aims at developing a new
comprehensive theory of the avantgarde. For further information
please consult the project's website at
http://www.arts.ed.ac.uk/langgrad/rprojects/
One of the studentships will be based at the University of Edinburgh
under the supervision of Professor Dietrich Scheunemann. The research
to be carried out will focus on literary concepts of the avant-garde
with particular emphasis on visual and sound poetry of Dada and the
concrete poetry of the neo-avant-garde.
The second studentship will be based at the University of Glasgow.
The research, supervised by Dr David Hopkins, will focus on
neo-avant-garde art with particular emphasis on Fluxus, Situationism
and the post-war reception of Dada and Surrealism. Both studentship
holders are expected to contribute to project publications.
The studentships are for the period of three years, starting on 1
January 2003 or as soon as possible thereafter. Applicants are
expected to hold a first postgraduate degree or are on course for
such a degree. The studentships include the payment of tuition fees,
a maintenance grant and an allowance for travel expenses.
Application is by letter and cv including the names of two referees.
Please send applications for both studentships to Professor Dietrich
Scheunemann, University of Edinburgh, David Hume Tower, George
