FREE MANIFESTA NEWSLETTER 22.8.02
-------------------------------------------
The summer of FREE MANIFESTA is coming to a close, and August 25 (Sunday)
will be the last day to stop by the Free Manifesta headquarters and pick
up free art and artists information sheets. However, many of the FREE
MANIFESTA artists projects are ongoing, especially work accessible through
the internet. The FREE MANIFESTA website will remain online indefinitely
as a catalog of the show and an access point to all of the artists and
their works.
The next two issues of this newsletter will focus on the wide array of
internet artworks which are part of FREE MANIFESTA. I'd like to send
particular thanks to RHIZOME for creating and sustaining an amazing
community of artists, so many of whom have contributed generously and
enthusiastically to this project.

IO-N.NET is a cooperative project in FLASH which presents artistic
proposals whose starting points are "neutral" technological elements (HTML
code, iteration, synthesis, downloading, screensaver, etc.) and whose
point of arrival is the constitution of new perceptions: technologies far
from being instruments subjected to our will, restructure our
being-in-world, our identity, our imaginary and our esthetics.
You are invited to submit new projects. http://io-n.net/

*DECAY: CHRIS BASSETT
*decay makes visible the underlying technologies in many of the images and
transactions across the internet. This isn't as simple as code
deconstruction though, its more about making something beautiful in its
self-destruction. 5 famous images are borrowed from the Louvre and
subjected to destruction as they are viewed across the internet. Much as
light fades and varnish collects dust, these digital versions crumble into
patterns of noise with each passing set of eyes.

_][ad][Dressed in a Skin C.ode_: MEZ
_][ad][Dressed in a Skin Code_ holistically documents select phases of the
mezangelle language system and its evolution/revolution [1995-2001]. This
mezangelle system is devoted to the exploration and push and pull of new
media and avatar/collaborative layering via a networked medium. The
emphasis of _][ad][Dressed in a Skin Code_ revolves around the use of
mezangelle, which evolved/s from multifarious email exchanges, computer
code flavoured language and net iconographs.

ANTI-SMOKERS-SP01: ALEXANDRA REILL
anti-smokers-sp01 is a selfportrait of the author relating to a smoker's
conditioning in an environment conditioned on anti-smoking and the
conditioning of a non-smokers' environment by a smoker's dispostions.
interactivity focuses on the personal use & view of the user.
anti-smokers-sp01 can be viewed as a classical photo series or - by moving
the scrollbar up & down in an individual rhythm - as animated movie in 8
parts, each developing a different rhythm through the user's emotional &
sensual approach. Is there more to health than health- and anti-health
questions ? More to moral than moral- and anti-moral questions ? Truth-
and anti-truth questions ? Do individual approaches to perception maybe
contain more authenticity & reality than theories & classified approaches
of perception ? alexandra reill 2002

ART-DEATH INTERNATIONAL SURVEY: TAMARA LAÏ
Is Art Dead? For a number of years, some theorists have been asserting
that, with the advent of the internet and wild reproduction (sampling,
copy-paste, etc.), we are witnessing the death of art. If we are to assume
that art is dead, what would you replace it with? More than 150 artists
and intellectuals replied to this call for participation. They each
submitted a "representation" of the concept of "art" - image, photo, text,
etc. http://users.skynet.be/tamara.lai/art/art.htm

AUTOMATIQUE: ARMELLE AULESTIA
"Automatique" is a rhythmic, continuous stream of a voice repeating the
same double meaning words.
This piece requires no interaction from the viewer. Keywords: audio,
automatic, language. http://www.aulestia.net/automatique/

BANNER ART COLLECTIVE: BRANDON BARR (FOUNDER)
The Banner Art Collective (http://www.bannerart.org/) creates, collects,
and distributes web.art and poetry within the limitations and context of
web advertisements. Artists can add works to the collection, and viewers
can host works from the collection on their own websites by pasting a few
lines of code into their own HTML code.

CAUTION: ÉMILIE PITOISET
Larsen is a sound effect which generates itself its own accidents. Its
operation is established in connection with a positive feedback whose
Reason exceeds 1. Thus, this acoustic phenomenon becomes an autonomous
system which to perhaps control by a negative feedback, implying an
interaction for example. CAUTION announces any participative means. This
site functions on the model of Larsen essentially. It is geared down,
regenerating itselfby the intermediary of an invasion of the screen, of
44"popup" windows (simulating a labyrinth) each one comprising 44
individual larsens. That reduces the memory of the navigator and the fact
bugger. This work functions with the manner of an autonomous system which
loops unceasingly on itself and creates the accident.

Cult of the Cor[porat]e [Per]form[ance] Art[ist] - Shoot the Bird: JOSEPH
FRANKLYN MCELROY & DONNA MCELROY
Performance has become a key term that in turns applys to experimental
art, worker productivity, and functionality of technical, corporate, and
military systems. Extrapolating from the purist corporatist bent, when we
call Performance artistic, it references a cultural production that is
meaningful and has defineable roles in relation to the subjects of
experience. In Allan Kaprow's book of essays "The Blurring of Art and
Life", he is interested in an intersection between art and life...mainly,
does a line have to exist at all ... maybe it is possible to bend art
space to the Life Standard or life space to the Art Standard. The
Cor[porat]e [Per]form[ance] Art[ist] explores this line, and extends the
line into virtual space or Virtual Standard.

DAILY HEADLINE DEATHS: RICARDO MIRANDA ZUÑIGA
A web page will be populated by 1000 individual icons resembling human
figures. Each icon represents a human being. From June 15th to August 25th
one icon will disappear for each death reported on the front page of the
New York Times Online. The space from which the icons disappear will be
populated by a new icon representing how the reported death(s) occurred.
If the deaths occurred due to an act of aggression, the new icon will be
accompanied by a flag or emblem representing the nation, organization or
individual claiming responsibility. Below the icons are listed each day's
death headline(s). http://www.ambriente.com/today/

THE DIGITAL POCKET GALLERY: KANARINKA, PIRUN, JESS LOSEBY, JEREMY TURNER
The digital pocket gallery effort began in March 2002. The digital pocket
gallery was inspired by the real-life Pocket Gallery at 536 gallery in
Vancouver, Canada. The 536 Digital Wallet Gallery in Helsinki, Finland,
is a related effort which is also accepting submissions. Pockets contain
miniature biographies and testaments to our lives and forgotten stories.
The crumpled train ticket speaks of journeys taken, the handful of
confetti in your 'best' jacket of a wedding years before or the telephone
number on the back of a matchbook given by a someone who's name and face
is long forgotten. Files and folders are the 'digital pockets' of the
internet artist. The hard-drive is an autobiography in coded form. Dreams,
ideas and waste lie hidden in these cryptically labelled pockets that have
become the maps and landscapes of our virtual lives.

DIGITAL TECHNOLOGY: JUDSON
Binary digital technology as applied to the current user remains
asynchronous. Are we prepared for what our disturbingly expensive
hardware/software, internet connections bring us. The machines currently
marketed are still rather primitive and yet the industry has been
drastically "upgrading" for approximately 15 years. This piece serves as
commentary, as well as a demonstration of the hi-end state of our
machines' processing ability. http://plasmastudii.org/techno/techno.html

ENANTIOTROPIA: BUGS (ALIAS LUCILLA LODI)
Enanthiothropeia (turning): the reversible transformation of a substance
between different lattice form. In the chaotic and contradictory
complexity of the "dailiness", its constrictive rules, is almost
impossible the abstraction leading us to a spiritual, human dimension.
It's common conception that machineries induce to a loss of perception of
the "Reality". But, what's this "Reality"?

ENREGISTER 1: ARMELLE AULESTIA
This proposal functions on the rhythmic alternation of appearance and
disappearance. An object, and a voice whispering uncertain words, dissolve
into each other or superimpose onto each other in an imprecise way, in an
incessant back and forth. "Enregistrer 1" is elaborated on the idea of
unrolling, of visual and resonant wavering, the game of the compulsive
gesture that starts the circle/cycle of repetition, of the loop again,
indefinitely free from alteration of meaning.

EURO STARS: ANDREJ TISMA
Euro Stars web site is an ironical view of Europe and its history full of
wars, destruction and barbarism which continues to our days. It is a
reaction to the big EU's campaign for united Europe in which many
countries from the region would like to become members of. This is a web
site which shows how most of European countries came to their wealth and
today's status, and why are they still striving for power and
globalization. Every yellow star from the EU's circle symbol is linked to
an image which illustrates my message through documentary scene, from the
past and present. Welcome to Europe!

FILMSCAPE: NICOLAS CLAUSS
Filmscape, an interactive video triptych (in shockwave and on the web), is
a formal research. The purpose is to let the sight explore a short film
extract like it would explore a landscape, leaving imagination travelling.
Each piece is a endless loop in which you can move by zooming. By moving
the scene from one corner to another, the viewer will launch narrative
(visual and sound) elements which give different interpretation of the
scene. Finally Filmscape is the use of founded filmed scenes (like founded
objects) which found a second "life".

GHOST CITY: JODY ZELLEN
Ghost City is an ever changing website. It focuses on the representation of
the city by the mass media. It uses the space of the web as a sculptural
space, allowing viewers to interact with animated graphics to delve deeper
and deeper into an imaginary city. Ghost City is a labyrinthine
environment through which viewers can navigate, either following the
linear narrative that unfolds by moving from page to page, or they can
delve into the non-linear chaos of random links. Each space is made up of
appropriated images and texts. The images are culled from various print
media sources. The texts are either found passages from urban theory or
specifically written poetic musings on the city. Rather than present
static images, Ghost City is a collage of moving parts. It is a pulsating
grid of flashing images that loop indefinitely. The viewer is an urban
wanderer moving through the site, step by step, page by page. One moves
forward and back retracing ones steps within the urban grid, discovering
new spaces and new meanings. http://www.ghostcity.com/
