Singapore resident Kasai Reiko on the current Singapore International Film
Festival:

Among the film festivals in Asia, the Hong Kong Film Festival might be the most
well-known one, but the Singapore International Film Festival, which is
held for the
fifteenth time this year, is in no terms second to it. From the start on
April 11, to its end
on April 27, the festival is showing a total of 390 works by filmmakers
from forty-five
countries. Large numbers of visitors are again expected from neighbour country,
Malaysia, and for the period of this biggest film fest in South-east Asia,
fans will be
totally absorbed in their hobby.

February 6 (Wed)

Feelings of expectation and unrest mingle in the interview with Beatrice
Dalle, who is
visiting Japan for the first time. The protagonist of "Betty Blue," which I
watched several
times in movie theatres, is here to promote her new movie, "Trouble Every Day."
The film earned both praise and critic at last year's Cannes Film Festival,
and Dalle is
enjoying a high reputation as a pretty extravagant actress. Her trip to
Japan began with
the little mishap of missing the plane, which caused her to arrive here one
day later than
planned. The interview for COMPOSITE was originally scheduled for the
second interview
day, but it was then changed not only to the first day, but we are even the
first in the whole
interview schedule. Due to the sudden changes, the people at Kinetique, who
are in
charge of the film's distribution and promotion, are in a big hurry. While
wondering how
this is going to work out, I arrive at the Kinetique office, a huge,
loft-style space located
inside Asahi Soko in Tsukishima. The Asahi Soko accommodates a number of
offices from
various 'creative' fields, and a visit there makes one think that, finally
Tokyo has jumped on
the loft culture train.

(4) Event Pick of the Week

inVex - Intercultural Videoart Exhibition (Europe)

The Videoart Centre Tokyo presents an event to show works by up-and-coming
video
creators from Europe and Japan. Among the ninety participating artists are
not only
representatives from 'Euro' countries, but also from the eastern part of
Europe and
Yugoslavia, so this promises to be an interesting collection. Shorter films
on the program
are around one minute long, so how about just dropping by and have a look -
there
might be nice discoveries to make. Also on display is an installation that
was created as
a collaboration by Japanese and European artists.
