Woof Woof
becoming-animal

Woof Woof is an exhibition of becoming-animal at the Austrian Cultural Forum.

For humans, animals have had a multiplicity of meanings and functions: as food, as pets, as symbols of virtues, ideas and psychological states. Animals serve corporations and nations, appearing on flags, in heraldry and on logos. But Woof Woof is not an animal theme show addressing these concerns it is a becoming-animal. Coined by French theorists Deleuze and Guattari, this term means moving away from the anthropomorphic, away from human sense into animal non-sense.

The exhibition will include drawing, painting, video, sculpture, photography and performance from eighteen artists. Michaela Math adopts animal personae with her repertoire of cats, snakes, spiders and protozoa. Oleg Kulig is known for his performances on Moscow streets and various international art venues in which, naked and collared, he terrorises passers-by as a dog. Tiago Carniero da Cunha has filmed an animal impersonator giving his most convincing ape performance. Imre Bukta makes work on his farm, using materials like corn and straw, creating playful animal forms. Peter Pommerer will be making a specially commissioned wall drawing. David Wilkinson is showing new work using found, broken porcelain figures.

The exhibition, which includes artists from Austria, Hungary, Serbia, Russia, Brazil and the UK, will open with a performance by Fabienne Audeoud and a live horse guard by Beáta Veszely.
The archive at the Hungarian Cultural Centre will consist of documentation of the participating artists' works and historical material including artists such as Antonin Artaud and Jannis Kounnelis. On the opening night there will be a performance by David Burrows and Bob and Roberta Smith, who recreate Joseph Beuys's performance I like America and America likes Me.

A book of new writing Woof Woof will be published on the occasion of the exhibition. It includes texts by Steve Baker who is the author of the Postmodern Animal, the Serbian writer and painter Mileta Prodanovic, the art historian László Beke, artist David Wilkinson and the exhibition curators.

Participating Artists: Fabienne Audeoud, Imre Bukta, David Burrows, Tiago Carneiro da Cunha, Gelatin, Gilbert and George, Lola Kovács, Oleg Kulig, Matthew Leahey, Goshka Macuga, Michaela Math, John Russell, Sinisa Savic, Bob and Roberta Smith, Peter Pommerer, Beáta Veszely, Ferenc Veszely, David Wilkinson.

Woof Woof will migrate from London to Project, Dublin in January 2002.
