Pomp Out of Place
Computer House of Mode

recommended by RT's second editor Karaki Gen

It's been more than ten years since the era of champagne, sheafs
of banknotes, 'bodycon' and German cars. This country's economy
has hit the bottom, and gone are the times where your ordinary
high-school student rents a hotel suite over Christmas. And then
they came down to Earth, the two vanity angels, spraying an air
of splendour and wealth from every single pore of their bodies
and calling themselves "shimai" (sisters). Two perfect bodies,
female from head to toes, flipping back any gossip. Jewelry and
pret-a-porter dresses. The mass-media are writing up their luxurious
lives, and everybody's watching them and laughs. I think what the
laughter is aimed at is the true face of the media. Because it's
just ridiculous…

(2) CD of the Week

No. 9: "Mushi-no-ne"

As the title ("Sound of Insects") suggests, this album features
insects' sounds all over the place. It's a wonderful kind of music
that reminds me of the time when I was playing 'insect world' as
a kid. In an excellent fusion of sounds and styles No. 9 blends
electronic and acoustic instruments to delicate musical collages
of jazz- and hip hop-influenced breakbeats. If you're asking for
similar artists, what springs to mind first are the tense atmosphere
and the omnipresent sense of beauty in the melody lines of Bjork's
or early Autechre's releases. The kaleidoscopic microcosm of
"Mushi-no-ne" is made up of ten sound miniatures that are without
exception wonderful little pieces of music.
