Cinephiles, Shoot Off to Yurakucho!
TOKYO FILMeX 2001

recommended by Nishimura Yoshio, the man behind the "Seochon" web
site (http://www.seochon.net/) for everything related to Korean film


A festival no movie fan should ever miss, TOKYO FILMeX, is held
at Yurakucho's Asahi Hall and other venues, offering once again
an attractive selection of high quality films. It is a young
festival that started last year with the concept of introducing
new filmmakers. Ignoring factors such as production budget or
cast/staff names, this is an event that introduces particularly
unique works from around the world, with a strong focus on Asian
countries. A total of 17 films are shown at the festival's two
main sections, the "Special Screenings" and the "Competition,"
and with 'Palme d'Or' winner "The Son's Room / La Stanza Del Figlio"
being the only non-Asian entry, this festival is convincing as a
thoroughly organised Asian film special. And it better does focus
on this area, since both long-established film Meccas such as Hong
Kong, Taiwan, China or Iran, and up-and-coming film nations such
as Korea or Thailand are real cinematic treasuries with countless
young directors to discover…
