TOPIC

The Fall of the Lux

The Lux Centre on Hoxton Square in east London was an important
international centre for film, video and media arts. Closed down suddenly
in October, the Lux is now in liquidation.
How could such an important and irreplaceable institution simply disappear
overnight, with dedicated and highly professional staff members being
sacked without notice? And what's in store for the future? Will London and
the UK simply have to do without a centre for artistic film and media?
These and other questions will be pursued in our main topic. We will of
course avoid pointing the finger at any particular persons or groups. But
neither will we attempt to conceal the causes of this lamentable plight ...

NEWS

Filmmakers Information Center - a New Cooperative in Japan

Japanese non-commercial films and filmmakers today follow in the footsteps
of a long and impressive history of independent filmmaking, but
nevertheless face various problems in screening, distribution, and public
recognition. Taking on this challenge, a new filmmakers' coop called
Filmmakers Information Center (FMIC) will be launched next spring by
several young Japanese filmmakers.
The group's activities will focus on collecting and compiling a database of
films and filmmakers and assisting distribution.
FMIC was initiated by experimental filmmaker Ichiro Sueoka (Tokyo) and film
critic Tomohiro Nishimura (website not yet available).
