Selective Affinities
A Panel Discussion
In conjunction with the group exhibition Multiple Partners–currently on view
at Pablo’s Birthday–the gallery and participating artists present
Selective Affinities, a panel discussion about community, gender, and connectivities
in the New York art world.
Panelists: Anat Ebgi, Phong Bui, Lea Rekow, Michael Sellinger, Brian Sholis
and Lilly Wei.
Moderated By: Carla Gannis
When: Saturday, October 15, 2005, 4:00 pm
Where: Pablo's Birthday, 84 Franklin St, New York, NY (between Church and
Broadway)
Dialogue:
The New York art world, arguably the most influential of many international
art centers, has taken harsh criticism recently for being too market driven
to represent the truly best in art. A mercenary and soulless picture takes
form, where money, conformity, and power obfuscate conviction, originality, and
integrity. It can be easy to overlook the artists, writers, curators, and
gallerists in New York whose contributions help form a more inspiring and vital
scenario. Many of these individuals support the mutual success of their
peers, sharing resources and information; write insightful and judicious analysis;
curate provocative and challenging shows; and operate galleries and art
spaces that provide alternative perspectives to the status quo.
Selective Affinities brings together a diverse and distinguished group of
art professionals. Panel members will share their perspectives on the creative
communities they are a part of, or see developing; gender dialogues in
contemporary art; and the currents they see connecting visual culture together. A
Q&A open to panelists and participating artists of "Multiple Partners" will
follow the panel discussion.
