For you extremely mechanical types:

Hyperdimensional forms pass through our "2 dimensional" reality which 
could be called higher  order consciousness.

Similar to the story of the big game hunter who, in search of the most 
exquisite game, travelled to the heart of some jungle or another in 
search of a mythic animal the locals described.  Of course he finds it 
and witnesses a form, floating in mid air, that is constantly morphing, 
changing shape in ways that do not seem physically possible.

And then there is that convenient tale "Flatland"

Mr. Sphere passes through flatland.  To the 2d inhabitants it appears 
to be a circle that starts out a small dot, grows to a larger circle, 
and then shrinks to a dot again.

Ever wonder why one might find Jokers laying face up strewn about the 
city over the course of a couple weeks?  Chance, just randomness, 
that's all.
